The Boy Next Store

Part One

Kevin

It was just a normal june day on that day long ago when it all started. I was playing in my front yard when a moving truck pulled up to the house next door. Our neighbors  the Lucas’s moved out a month ago. I guess this is the family who bought the house. A middle aged man with a moustache hopped out of the front of the truck with a mover. A minivan pulled into the driveway and out hopped a boy who looked to be about ten with his mother. I walked over and said hi I am Kevin Wayne and that I lived in the house next door. He said that his name was Aidan Mccartney and he was ten.  That’s when my dad came out the door and waved to Aidan’s Mom.

He said “Kevin I am glad to see you met the Mccartneys.”

“Hi Jamie said Mrs.Mccartney.”

“Hello Evelyn” he replied.

Dad walked over there to help the move in while Aidan and I went and played catch with a football in our backyard. We talked about ourselves and I told him about the neighborhood. In the end he ended up spending the night. We stayed up all night watching Star Wars and Indiana Jones. I thought it would be the beginning of a great long friendship, but I was wrong. It was the last time we had fun before everything went downhill little by little till it was intolerable.

Two months had gone by since Aidan moved in next door. Strange things started happening. Aidan would come by at three in the morning asking if I was home. I also started noticing some of my things going missing. One day when I was at Aidan’s house I did a little snooping and found my lucky baseball card that went missing under his bed. Aidan wasn’t home but his mom was so I decided to come back later. I hid in the mccartney’s front yard in the bushes when Aidan came home with their dad. They were dressed in all black and had a big black bag. I noticed the bag squirming and Aidan hit the bag almost as a response. They took the bag inside and I ran to under the window. I could hear muffled voices but not clear enough so I opened up the basement window and peeked inside and there were guns, wire cutters, crowbars and hammers. Everything thieves would need. Then it dawned on me. The Mccartney’s were thieves. I heard voices so I listened in.

“I can’t believe the op went stale. We had all the tools and keys to success.”

“That reminds me” someone said. I could tell it was Mrs. Mccartney speaking. “That twerp Kevin came looking for you, I said you weren't home. He getting nosy we need to eliminate him.”

“ Agreed we do it in the next week. What’s that right there” said Aidan. I bolted from the window and ran through their front yard. I ran into our backyard and slammed open the door and went to my room. It would take me a few hours to calm down and go to sleep.

Part Two

Aidan

It all started when I was born. My great, great, grandfather was Jesse James. The outlaw who was known as one of the most ruthless men ever during the Civil War. He killed hundreds of people. He was Allan Pinkerton's number one on his most wanted list in the US.  The rest of my family since then have been crooks. My dad met my mom during a prison escape. They got married and had me. Since I was five I have been helping my parents pull of crimes. I would sometimes act as a distraction.

The only reason we moved in to Kevin’s neighborhood was to rob a jeweller's  house who lived two blocks away. The jeweller had security guards posted around his property. Every couple days my dad and I would sneak over there at night and kidnap one of the guards. It was on one of those ops when we saw a creeper through our basement window. I looked up at the window and saw and shadow by the window.

I said “What’s that right there.”

My dad grabbed a gun and bolted up the stairs and I heard him fling the front door open. My mom picked up a gun shoved a cartridge inside and closed the window and took me upstairs.

She locked the basement door and said “grab a taser and a silencer out of the closet.”

I went to the closet put in the code to the safe and handed the silencer to my mom and I loaded the taser for myself. My mom went and stood on the porch and told me to stay inside. I had a feeling that Kevin was the one at the window. The time had come for me to get rid of him.

Part Three

Kevin

I spent the whole next day wondering what I should do. Should I tell my parents or the police? I decided to wait till tomorrow morning to tell my parents. I tried not to think about it as much as possible. Dinner was really strange for me. I had trouble looking my parents in the eye. At one point, I almost cracked and told them everything that had happened. I got ready for bed as usual and was watching tv in my bed when my mom said that Aidan was here. She said that he wanted to see me. I walked as slowly down my steps as I possibly could. When I got to the bottom of the steps I saw the smirk on his face. What he didn’t know was that I had a surprise for him when we were alone.

“I’ll leave you two to your business” said my mom.

As soon as my mom walked away he said “let’s talk outside.”

We walked outside and he closed the door behind him. His parents stepped out of the bushes.

“Hi Kevin” they said.

Mr. Mccartney pulled out a gun from his side and handed it to Aidan who put on a silencer and cocked it. Right as he pulled the gun to my face I turned on a soundtrack from my room and a blue and red flashing light. It sounded and looked like the cops were coming. They ran like cats being chased by dogs. They ran to there car and drove off. I got a picture of their license plates and pictures of them earlier. Then I went inside and called the cops.

Epilogue

The cops came and found all of the Mccartney’s stuff including three people locked in a closet. They eventually caught them and they were put on trial. I was called on as a witness and Mrs. Mccartney and Aidan plead guilty but Mr. Mccartney didn’t. Mrs. Mccartney was sentenced to twenty years at the state penitentiary. Mr. Mccartney was sentenced for fifty years in prison. He would later die of a stroke while in prison at age sixty two. Aidan was sent to Juvenile Detention Center. He would be there for ten years. He later was convicted of larceny and spend another twenty years in the the pen. But it all started on that one summer day in June forty years ago.
