Know Your Mushrooms: “Welcome to the fungal jungle.” That about sums it up. This entertaining film takes a look at various types of mushrooms, identification, hunting for them, mushroom festivals, mushroom maniacs, and the lore that surrounds the mushroom’s link to the psychedelic. (Includes some Flaming Lips soundtrack.)

Throw Down Your Heart: This Documentary features musician Béla Flek on his quest to follow the roots of the banjo. Yes, a whole film about the banjo! Flek heads to Africa and tracks down various musicians to play the banjo with. (Also check out the CD.)

Flintown Kids: Set in Flint, Michigan and told from a teen POV, teens find themselves choosing between playing basketball and a life of crime on the street. It’s a raw, in your face look at their passion for basketball and what some teens are up against.

Hip Hop Project: The film shows how former homeless teenager, Kazi, developed an outreach program to help motivate New York City teens to express themselves through hip hop music. He encourages the teens to realize that their music can have a positive impact on themselves and the lives of those around them.

My dad's trying his hand at... growing? breeding? culturing? (non-psychedelic) mushrooms this year. I have a somewhat irrational fear of fungi, so the product doesn't appeal to me, but the fact that he's essentially just going to hit this log and edible things will wake up and grow is pretty darn cool.
