We had been working on the project for years. Countless tests conducted, millions of dollars spent. The original deadline for the project had been nearly three years ago, but the new deadline had just been pushed up again, to today. We had studied the previous project notes in detail, checking the math and considering all factors, and we felt pretty confident. Guests were arriving, so we scrambled to make sure all the pieces were in place. The benefactor of the project always liked to make a big deal of each test, inviting as many people as possible, but lately the crowds had dwindled in size. Maria was reviewing all of the parameters, and looked up to give me a thumbs up. I looked over to Roger, whose hand was steady on the lever and nodded. Then I looked back to John, the head of the project. He nodded back and turned to press the button. It was time. The go light flashed and I checked the monitors, then typed in the sequence. Sarah flicked the three switches, and Roger pulled the lever. We all turned to look at the table, everyone silent. Three fingers twitched. Test 314, successful.
