Film & Discussion: Prom Night in Mississippi
prom night take 2
In 1997, Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman offered to pay for the senior prom at Charleston High School in Mississippi under one condition: the prom had to be racially integrated. His offer was ignored. In 2008, Freeman offered again. This time the school board accepted, and history was made. Adults and teens (grade 9 and up) are invited to the Downtown Library Multi-Purpose Room for a special screening of the award-winning documentary which chronicles the events leading up to the ground-breaking prom.
Prom Night in Mississippi will be presented on Thursday, March 18 from 6:30-8:30 pm, and will be followed by an audience discussion led by the film's director, Paul Saltzman. This event is co-sponsored by the UM Community Scholars Program.

I saw most of this work on HBO awhile back. It's reassuring how such a moving, inspiring work can come from such a terribly depressing situation. And the kids at the heart of the piece deserve so much of the credit for being the inspiring part of the story. Definitely worth your time.
Thank you for the synopsis of Prom Night in Mississippi. I can't wait to see it. Stories like this always make one ponder the true live happenings in our cities and sad situations turning into something great is always good.
I can't wait for that day. Prom is the classical cultural dance where high school student gathering at one certain place and they dance with couples. It is typically held especially the junior and senior level in the end of the year. This popular cultural event seems as major events of high school student life. We could see in these days, the younger are changing the themes of prom too with a time. It would the great event of high school life and it's a one of the prettiest day. Everyone looks awesome with the formal traditions dress up. Attending prom has been common on this day. Anyway I don't want to miss to that event and it will be more extreme day with a present of Paul Saltzman the film director.
