Description
Laz Slomovits (of the folk duo Gemini) presents an evening of poetry he has set to music. Accompanied by harmonica virtuoso Peter Madcat Ruth and Emmy award-winning keyboard player Brian Brill, Laz joins a very ancient tradition found in cultures all over the world — for musicians to take beloved poems and turn them into songs. From the mystical lyrics of the 13th & 14th Century Persian poets, Rumi and Hafiz, to the classic poems of the American greats, Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost, to those of the much loved contemporary poet, Naomi Shihab Nye, Laz’s gorgeous melodies make these poems leap off the page. A special feature of this program will be Laz’s settings of the poems of Michigan poets Linda Nemec Foster, Nancy Baker, Faith Heers, Jennifer Burd and others.
