Nebraska on DVD & Blu-ray

by manz

Nominated for a 2014 Academy Award for best picture, Nebraska tells the story of a cantankerous father and his son who take a road trip from Montana to Nebraska in order for the father to claim a mega millions sweepstakes prize that doesn’t actually exist. His family tries to enlighten him but he is insistent that he make it to Nebraska even if he has to walk, so his son begrudgingly drives him. This black and white, sleepy-time film is a gem that's beautiful on screen with superb acting from Bruce Dern and Will Forte. It’s a wonderful look at the father-son relationship. Directed by Alexander Payne of Sideways and The Descendants.

I viewed this film a week or so ago and loved it. I love (and have lost) dear old farts just like the main character of this film. Reminded me how uncomfortable and stinging loving your aging parents/loved ones can be and how many opportunities there are to be thoughtful, brave, and kind. Spoiler alert. The whole punching someone in the face thing is unfamiliar to me but I found it exhilarating all the same.

I was actually not sure if I should take the time to watch this movie or not. Usually I watch all of the Academy Award nominees, but I ran into The Master...and that was a bust. But since I heard that it's good, I'll put it on my wish list.
