Super Smash and Double Dash Tournament Weekend

Registration is open for Friday Night's Super Smash Bros. Melee Tournament from 6-9 PM for ages 13 and up, and Saturdays' Round 2 in the Super Smash Double Dash Championship Series! Register now to bypass long lines at the event and get right to open play. Tonight's Melee tournament will be 100% ITEM-FREE, so those of you that have no love for lady luck can relax a little, but remember that you'll have no excuse if you lose. Read on for more.

Saturday's Clan Battle will have a similar format to round 1, except for a different final game, of course, and I think we'll do kart first for 8 2-player teams for full clan participation. Also, based on your suggestions, each member of your clan that is present must participate in at least one phase of the clan battle, so keep that in mind. I've got a great surprise game lined up, so get speculating.... see you tonight and tomorrow!

so who won the clan battle this time? we are hard is probably the best clan right now because they randomly got the 2 best melee players there. and monkeyman beat lucky fetus in elims becuz "sudden death is unfair". i lost to ownerer (no surprise there) in the first elim... but i killed him once! (which means little) it was funny when shenron kept on saying i suked with marth becuz we lost 2 him in team. we were 1 of the 2 teams out of the 17 that advanced who got a first and a second. we played limabean and shenron again. we shut them up. ^_^

we utterly dominated, totally and completely, and yeah, we won the clan battle

and Limabean, good match, im not making any excuses, all that happened was, you played a good match, and we played a bad one, and MDidget, ur predictions were pretty much what happened

you know a clan is good when 1835 pts gets you 5th place in your own clan

and those two random guys that we added arnt exactly random, plus they dont even play mario kart at all.

Double smash: 2 out of 3 clan treams for 2nd and 3rd!
Singles cart: 1st place

I'd like to bring an old topic of discussion back from the graveyard: Double Dash Time Trials. In the GT Kart events, though talent no doubt plays a large part in determining the outcome, there is an irremovable element of randomness generated by items and by the lack of choice regarding vehicles or characters. As there is little that can be done to alter this state of affairs within the framework of the tournaments, it falls to "Time Trials," the only truly objective means, to measure absolute driving skill. One milestone on the path toward excellence is the overturning of the Staff Ghost times, which manifest themselves in the form of permanently-saved course ghosts representing the vehicles of the game's creators. About a year ago, I claimed to have beaten all of them, which met with disbelief on the hands of a few, a fact which rankles even to this day. And I quote:
"Beating a staff ghost is all,[sic] but impossible."
"Pickwick I can't believe you on the grounds of impossibility. I have a hard time believing that you beat one of them let alone all of them. Also it is impossible to beat the staff ghosts without the Bowser kart. Without the 5 stars you can't acheive the speed neccesary[sic] to meet let alone beat the staff ghost time. I personally saw a video of the staff ghost on Daisy's Cruiser and I don't believe that is possible for a player who didn't design the game to beat it and especially with a 1 top speed kart."

It is by no means impossible, I have done it many times with many karts, and I would like to submit some of my times as evidence of my assertion. If you beat or have beaten any of them, you win a cookie for each one!!!

Those tourtaments reminded me of the good old days 40 people and Eli was the only staff member their. one reason i think attendance was so low was because the thread pooped up a little too late and no items scared away some people.
Also will this tourney be on CTN

limabean beat me on Mushroon Kingdom II CAUSE HE IS SUCH AN F***ING NOOB AND DIDNT WANT TO DO FD, F***ING NOOB, you dont deserve to be alive, all that said, he just spammed dash attack with shiek, and i still almost beat him, even thought Mushroom kingdom II would be the worst IC course ever (no room to get under opponent, stupid blocks), judging by ur skill limabean (if you have any) i would 4 stock you on FD, NOOB. anyway Mdidget i lost in the semis to limabean

Pickwick, i think it sounds like a really fun idea, but you would have to have all 40+ players have time trials on the same single course, also, also, if you generated random characters like how it is now than it would make the time trials unfair, right?

i found baby park staff ghost easy 2 beat... i got 1:08:995 on it after i got the hang of cutting my turns really close(my whole clan can vouch 4 me)and i beat peach beach the first time i tried. mario kart ds staff ghosts r all really easy 2 beat except special cup. (iv beaten 25/32)

Doomblaze, that's a very, very good time; what kart did you use?

Swain212, I wasn't very clear about it, but I didn't mean to suggest that the library switch to Time Trials; that would make for a much less exciting, and only somewhat more fair, competition. Rather, I wanted to start a sort of ongoing contest over the forum, wherein the Kart players would compare their best times online. If nobody else is interested, that's fine, too.

Alright seriously, wtf. I just came to check to see what time the tournament was this coming weekend and found out that it was last weekend. This is the second month this has happened, although last month it was a saturday/sunday thing. My whining is based off the assertation that a tournament has never been on a weekend in the middle of the month before. &lt;_&lt; Ian, you sit next to me in Humanities, I'm in your clan. Give me a heads up or something next time &gt;_&gt;

pwnerer, ive played you enough to know that a moneymatch with you would only mean lost money, on the other hand, if you count me killing you 2 times in a 4 stock match as a win for me, id challenge you then, cause i know you cant 3 stock me, only 2 stock

lol, monkeyman shouldnt be on that list, i 4 stocked his sheik and his falcon with my icys, but the person that is b... is actually oroachimaru and you should also add Juggleguy, a formidable marth that i now have trouble 2 stocking, usually a close match

matt, ive 2 stocked him every time, hes never beaten my (except that one time i was using mew2, lol) ask him matt, he was lying when he said he beat me twice in a best out of 5, weve never even played a best out of five

well nothing if you can do it right, if you do it wrong you basically do a ground float that immediately cancels, pretty useless, but when done correctly can actually be quite useful, but it doesnt go as far though, long WD's go to icys and luigi

yeah thats what i meant, but seriously now that i think of it, WD'ing with peach isnt nearly as useful as say, icys or marth

Hmm. Moneymatch versus Ownerer, a player against whom I have a record of 0-5, when I've hardly played the game since last year's GT.... Maybe; I second Lain's position on the matter, though. When and where would this be?? And would you mind my effecting the turning up of my handicap to 9?
Regardless of the presence of money on the line, I would like to play you, as well as the other Melee experts new to this year.

Bad Driver, I'll describe one lap on Baby Park, and the others are pretty much the same. Get a rocket start; pull outward slightly, then Mini-Turbo (henceforth, MT) inward, then MT around the corner. MT against the inside wall, but facing outward, then do the same again; pull away from the centre and MT back in to position yourself for the turn, around which you will, of course, MT. As soon as you've made the turn, MT against the inside wall again twice, then from the outside inward once, and you should be at the end of the starting side, ready to make the first turn again. Just repeat from there. If you don't manage it perfectly on the first try... well, you can start a club with me; that's the way all the World Record times for the course were made, but, oddly enough, it seems to require some practice. I can do two per side consistently, but if I try for a third, it slows me down. World Record for Baby Park: 1:04:234.

the following are the only stages that should be allowed

1. FD
2. battle field
3. mute city
4. dreamland 64
5. pokemon stadium
6. Fountain of dreams
7. big blue
8. rainbow cruise
9. yoshi's story (the one without the big clouds, only the tiny one, cant remember the exact name)

those courses are the fairest in the game, giving no significant advantage for any one character

i think final destination should b banned, because jigglypuff and kirby can get back on the edge if they get hit under it. it should b banned because if give a significant advantage to those 2 characters, and fox/falco can snipe from the edge. if you dont wana play all the stages go 2 a "real tourney" where its final destination 1v1 without time... and fjw, if your so good, u should b able 2 get somemore melee wins. It's never Final Destination w/out time. It's always 5 neutral randoms, 4 stock, 8 minute. Then, nearly all the stages are available for the loser of the first match to use. I hate Final Destination, especially against (good) Marths, because Marth has a horrible advantage on the space animals on that stage. Usually I have to switch to Marth or Sheik to win. Jiggs and Kirby can't make it back unless the other player sucks, by the way. It's true that Falco has an advantage on that stage (Kirby?, Jigglypuff? What are you thinking?). Every character is advantaged on certain stages.

This is my position on stages:

Banned should be:
Brinstar Depths (the one with Kraid in the background)
Yoshi's Island 64
Big Blue
Hyrule Temple
Icicle Mountain
Flat Zone
Green Greens

Neutrals: Rainbow Cruise, Final Destination, Battlefield, Dreamland 64, Yoshi's Story (the non-64 one) Fountain of Dreams.

So like, the first stage is random, the second is picked by the loser of the first, and the third (if there is one) is picked by the loser of the second. You also can't play on the same stage twice in a set no matter what.

Also, some people on the moneymatch list are for fun, others are because they think they're really good and maybe they're not so good.

And if anyone wants to have a Super Smash Brothers Melee related Festival, a 'smashfest' so to speak, let me know.

The two things that I think need fixed are team melee and single melee. If two people from the same clan are in a FFA match together they have an unfair advantage. It would be nice if the system could be changed to not allow that.

Also in team melee double elimination should be implemented.

Also an interesting stat the top 15 players are all in a clan. The top player not to be in a clan Ben doll winner of season 1 round 3 but had to split his prize with his bro because he was inelgible.

I agree with Ownerer. Some characters have their advantages on certain levels. I myself play as Link, Jiggly, and Sheik/Zelda. Many people think that Jiggly sucks, but if you practice hard with that character, you turn out very good. So, adding to the topic, myself playing as Jiggly is a little difficult, but when I do levels like Corneria, I do much better. It's the levels that make a large difference in the outcome in the battle.

I'm not going to go on about stage choosing but I do agree with some of those banned stages.

Flat Zone
etc.

something is wrong with the results for team melee unless the teams were switched but its called a crew lost in a qualifaction round (and i dont believe they got back in they could've i guess) than they went on to get 4th. So they must have got a cheap move on or there is a problem

We got 4th because of the way the tiebreaker was done.

There were two teams that went 1-1 that were going to make it, and it was decided by the clan with the highest score. We had the highest score for the day at the time, so our team made it past.

Soooo, if ive got this right, Mdigit plays peach, and, I play peach. I think this calls for a 1 v 1 match, because, i need points too. That would come from playing with robin in team. I seems like there might need to be a peach showdown

Im loking for a partner for team kart, here are my stats:

- 2nd place singles in preseason
- into the finals for every team kart entered
- 1st place singles this month
- FJW and I got unlucky during the regular team kart events, but then completely crushed Bros and co. team, and turtle clan team, in BOTH team races in the clan battle.

Bad driver, in the last tournoments clan battle Turtle clan averaged a higher score for both of their teams, BUT, like FJW said, FJW and I did win both races

I misspoke, I think.

There were two teams that made it that had gone 1-1 in the elimination rounds.

We were one of those two teams, which were selected by the scores of the clans that the players were in. So if you weren't in a clan, you didn't even have a chance of making it. Lots of people went 1-1 though, and playing a team super sudden death would've been a big hassle.

my 5th slowest time is now 1:08.822, off the start I slide into the wall (all as one slide) then, let it boost me right, then left, then I slide left into the corner, just enough to make one small spark. Right after every turn I pull the control stick hard to the right to keep direction.

you shouldnt be talking arjan, i need to play you again, with like say my mewtwo (loljk) or maybe my shiek, and definitely with my icys again. and at "real" tourneys, they play like best out of something, say 5 or 7 or maybe even 11, anyway, the first match is a random stage from the 9 i listed, then after that the loser picks the stage. you should know that, and there is almost always a time limit, and yeah no items, usually 4 stock 8 time, and i do get melee wins, just not in singles, rob and i DOMINATE in team, always getting 2nd or 3rd, losing to those two black guys in our clan, anyway, i lose at singles cause icys suck in sudden death (stupid library rules, its always sudden death, 3 stock 3 time, WTF?!?!?!?) thats why im switching to sheik and mewtwo for the next smash singles when it is FFA, and yes swain212 did get like 1:08:822 on baby park, used the train kart with toad and paratroopa, i saw him do it, but the only thing is, the record is under my name, lol, his lap record is like 9:238.

I can't believe I agreed to play that black guy's Falco on FD. I was thinking about forcing the match to be played on a random stage, but I hate it when people do that to me, so I just conceded the stage selection. He ended up owning me. I gotta learn how to deal with short hop blasters and those upthrow to upair combos.

well hey peach is one tough customer. won with her on the team event. : )

i loved how on the finals those two guys wanted us to pick final destination. (i believe those same ones that coaxed Jugglyguy to pick FD), we decided flat out no against that, and went for a random. we got yoshi's story or something and it was great. haha.

playing a shorthopping falco on a completely flat stage is like instant death. haha.

the moneymatch thing could be done at the library. wink wink. maybe a little sidebet in the tournament too huh?

doomblaze, it doesnt matter who is better at smash, and anyway, i did horrible at FFA

swain212 isnt lying, we crushed because me and mike got first in both the clan battle races, but our other MKDD team sucks so they got 8th both times, so turtle clan obviously had the higher average score,

as for the noob, you still have plenty of time to sign up for the next tourney on 10/14, it online registration will be up about a week before the tourney,

and limabean, if you are any good at mario kart, you can be mike s' partner, but i think MDidget would be much better for robin,

seriously, mike s, you arent really that good at smash, you beat me simply because you play peach and i play icys, i crush you with mewtwo and sheik, anyway, you only downsmash and throw radishes, and although peach's downsmash is quite good in FFA, not so much in 1v1 or team against anyone who can wavedash

no offense, but i think MDidget would be the much better choice, and you only got first in team smash becuase you beat me and robin for the following reasons:

1. YOU REFUSED TO PLAY ON FD (so instead we get Yoshi Island 64, "great" IC course)
2. YOUR PARTNER WAS THAT REALLY GOOD BLACK GUY WHO PLAYS FALCO (although he didnt have to do much, you just flew to the cloud, and the falco killed robin once, and we were screwed)
3. YOU REFUSED TO PLAY ON FD (at least the black guy, i believe his name is MacThat, didnt care whether it was on FD or not, but you REFUSED, you were like absolutely no.)

By the way, those two black guys said they're going Falco + Falco next time in teams, so if we end up facing them on FD, with friendly fire OFF, we're toast. So always force a random stage against them, lol.

I usually resort to Samus in FFA. Her recovery owns. And it's not like I'm that bad with her, anyway. Mike - I think I could beat your ICs with my Samus. The two advantages you have against my Marth are your ice shots and your edgeguarding, which are both nullified a bit against Samus.

there are lots and lots of ways to desynch
and yeah WDing is important with IC's, it should essentialy replace all ground movement (run, walk etc), the only time you should run or walk is mindgames and the seldom used IC dash attack (although there is an infinite combo on fox that involves the downthrow, then since the icys are desycnched at that time, you dash attach with nana on the fox, WD forward, grab with popo, then rinse, lather, repeat) but as ownerer pointed out to me, its all about chain grabs

go to smashboards.com to find out ways to desycnch, there are many many, like taunt DS, dash dance DS, sidestep DS, plus many others, my personal favorite is simply grabbing someone to use the complex chain grab combos that i still need to put forth lots of work on (but i cant play SSBM on weekdays, stupid azn parents :-( ). but YAY another IC, i finally get o own another person that plays IC's yay, if you need any help just ask me, but check out smash boards, its amazing, go to character specific then IC's

limabean, just dont preregister, cause i still might go if it rains that day, so just wait till the tourney, and if im not there, just register with mike s for mario kart, mdidget will do smash with robin, team kart is the last thing, so you have plenty of time

swordmaster, your jiggs wasnt half bad, and although im glad you are trying new people, its always good to stick with your main for a long while, it takes a lot of practice to switch primary characters, but its always good to have secondarys (something i lack, uhhhh, mewtwoish, sheikish)

the next tourtament is October 14th which will be round 3 and run from 12-5 on saturday and be in downtown library basement. There will be 4 events single and team smash and single and team kart.
Prizes will be 40,30,20 for single events and those prizes will be split in half for team events.
No it is not too late to sign up registration will appear on this forum in maybe two weeks so this check the site periodically for updates about other tourtaments such as open friday night smash.

@kito- thats what i thought too till i actually played in the tournament, since from what ive seen im the best in my school and only my 2 younger brothers can beat me occasionally, then i come to the tournament and i see ppl thatr better than me, or at least better than the kids in my school :p

(and which school do you go to?) and even if you end up being better than all of us (highly unlikely, unless ur actually Dope or HoChinMinTrial or some other good midwest person, but they would NEVER come to this tourney) you still have to worry about items (ewww) and bad random stages (double eww) there is some luck involved. and again, do you play mario kart?

swordmaster, you qualify if your clan finishes in the top 4 at any tourney, or you finish in the top 1,2,3, 4 in any tourney (not sure whether its top 1,2,3, or 4), you can also qualify for the grand championships by winning at the wild card tourney before the grand championships.

*im not really sure if you had qualified yet because i dont really know how to qualify if you dont have a clan, you will have to ask a tourney vet like say, one of the savage brothers (tp2 or TC BD)

lol, ok swordmaster, i guess if they are all as good as you, then you have a chance, but mario kart is where you get the most points (as bros and co painfully pointed out to my clan), so you have to abolutely dominate smash (like we did) to make up for mediocre mario kart performances (like we had), thats how you get to be first in the clan scores, yay!

Kito, are you new? Also, about Halo tournaments, we have already nagged eli about Halo but he says that it is a Rated M game. It may seem quite easy, right?, but think about this:
Back in season 1, we only had MK:DD. In Season 2, we barley got by with SSBM because it had a T rating. I don't think Eli can convince the higher-ups (if there are any) to allow Halo tourneys. Sorry man...

And yea im new here evil bus driver, i happeend to pick up this axis magazine from this community center i work at in ann arbor and i saw some stuff about this tourney, which i think is a sweet idea. Ill admit im not half as good at melee as i am at the original, i dont even own a gamecube :P, but im gonna borrow one and im sure with enough practice, ill be good in no time...also, is there an anime club at the library? i saw something about that in axis too...

@kito- just to let you know, 75% of the ppl in this tourney uses marth/sheik, which is really annoying especially if you're a puffball against marths

I think you guys are getting too into it, like, the point of the tournament is to have some fun, play a few games, and maybe even get some money if you're lucky. This is not the place to be looking to see who's the best smash player.

What you guys need is a more professional tournament.

We need someone who's parents would be willing to have 25+ people over to have a tournament in their kid's basement, and we need a ruleset. I'm hoping this ruleset will look appropriate, i.e. no unnecessary bans, and PLEASE, DSR. We can discuss where and when to do it here, though.

yeah ownerer, prematch indimation may be the most effective form of mindgames,

yeah kito, kirby was pretty darned good in smash 64, but all the charcters were broken in that game (*cough* fox *cough* infinite shine/dash attack combo*cough*)
id like to play a good kirby, if you are going to the november tourney, i would be glad to play you, btw how old r u? and just to let you know, lots of people at the tourney dont own GC's, so you rnt alone. :P

ownerer, as for that ruleset i think it should be best out of 5, 4 stock 8 time, and random stages with the only ones allowed being FD, BF, DL64, and FOD, and maybe another moving platform stage just for fun and their lack of edges (haha falco players), as for the place, my house is too small, but yeah, we need DSR (dave's simple rule for those wont dont know, it makes it so you cant play on the same stage twice in a set)

Yea its hard to judge how good i really am because the people i've played against are mediocre at best...I gotta find someone who is good to practice against :P But i'll definately try my best to make it to the october match, i just gotta find out where the aadl is cuz ive never been there lol (i goto the ypsi library)

Hmm, well I do remember arguing with Duck, but not about that... It was about items' viability in tournaments and why it's impossible to alter the AADLGT settings to something preferable like 1v1 4 stock 8 minute Neutral randoms and DSR. I think at one point I mentioned that there was a trend with people who practiced the game with items off and being better than most people at the game.

Wait, Kito, you go to EMU? If so, that's cool, cause so do I, but also, that means that you're not elligible for the monthly tournaments, those are only for people in middle school or high school, However, you can still go to the Smash-specific tournaments, and those are held every so often. Look for announcements on here.

meh, you can practice all you want, but in MKDD, there comes to a certain level of skill (in versus mode), and from there on out, the only thing that matters is luck of the draw. but in time trial, thats a different story, it takes an enormous amount of skill to perform well in time trial, while just plain racing does take skill, it gets to a point where everyone is so good, that it all comes down to luck of items

1st, 2nd, and 3rd get prizes (assuming someone shows up!) Piratey_Critter is guaranteed not to be there, and since it'll have no items, the second place is up for grabs really.

If 7 bucks is too much, we can consider making it 5.

EDIT: The ruleset is yet to be decided; I'm thinking of putting Rainbow Cruise on random, mainly because there the large flat area + 3 platform thing can get really monotonous, and Rainbow Cruise has absolutely nothing bannable about it.

I know, it's missing the Yoshi Story (NOT PIPES!!!) stage. That stage is almost ALWAYS in Falco/Fox/Marth's favor. No matter what. DL64 can at least favor other characters once in a while. The only time Fox isn't winning on that stage is against Falco, and the only time Falco isn't winning is against Marth. So that stage is just a little too weighted to put on random, for me at least.

Oh, and if you want random help with something, or just want to play me, I'll be there (obviously).

I might hold an original SSB N64 version tornament. I just don't know when. I also need to get my controllers and game back from Andrew K. (you don't know him but I bet Duck knows him.) I also agree with Ownerer, Raimbow Cruise should be unbanned, there is very little places to hide because the level is constantly moving (I hate when you guys run and hide just because you think you have a better chance at winning in sudden death.)

yeah, i need some more info, such as time, and whos hosting it, and you really should have yoshi's story, although it does give advantages, its basically just DL64 with smaller borders. every course has a character which would be the favorite there, btw, is it best out of three DSR or what, how exactly is it set up?

I decided the ruleset. (No, YS is nothing like DL64, the smaller borders give Fox/Falco/Marth a huge advantage, while DL64 can be fairly balanced. It's only problem is camping)

There's an altered form of Dave's Stupid Rule in effect:

If someone is counter-picking a stage, he/she cannot choose the stage he/she last won on.

From there, we have advanced slobs, double blinds can be called at any time after stage is selected before initial character selection.

OK, i'll try my very hardest to be there, i think i will be able to make it, barring 18 hours of homework, i usually have nothing to do on Sunday. So is it 5 pm? r u sure, considering my timeliness i will be there around 4:30, is that OK?

yeah sure, new clans are always welcome, but usually every year, it ends up having 2 or 3 or maybe even 4 powerhouse clans (we are hard, turtle clan, and bros and co), then everyone else fights for the fourth spot in the clan battle. thats how it usually it, but you never know, we are hard is a new clan, and they are in first,

BUT REMEMBER,

you have to have mario kart skill to.. VERY IMPORTANT!!!

and as for We Are Hard, i think we already have more than enough smash talent, so unless you are as godly at MKDD as you are at smash, i would have to decline your request to join, and anyway, although that other guy doesnt earn many points, he is the most valuable player at the clan battle because he owns every gamecube game in existance

and i do have AIM, im usually always on, but not lately, my laptop died, and ive been mostly posting at school and on my dad's computer

yeah i would need more info for the sunday tourney too, im pretty sure i can go as long as i have info cuz my teachers wont give alot hw since its the hc dance on saturday!

The game itself looks pretty good with its stellar course designs and realistic Mario style graphics. Skies and roads look richly detailed and the game actually keeps up at an amazing 30 frames per second even on the LAN. It’s nothing amazing, but the game does have suitable graphics.
