For Street's Quest #3, In the window of Frank Glazier’s building, look to locate a small neon sign,
Your code is the letters and numbers: the words that those glass tubes define. I have looked and looked on all sides of the building and cannot find a neon sign. Is it still there? (Today was my 3rd trip downtown.) Any hints?

weird moment with the JUMP: EVENTS badge, I have entered the 1st code and it's listed on my score card.. but the badge only shows that I have found the 2nd code... did I miss something or is there a tech issue? anyone else running into this issue?

Just FYI, for the "JUMP AROUND!" badge, the last code is actually found in the second book, not the third, unless the list was changed when I finished the badge.

@ompopp I just checked the list again - using chrome and safari - and I see the 3rd book in the list with the code in at just as the clue says. If you can let me know what you're seeing we can see if there's an issue. What books are you seeing listed?

@irenzero Sorry about that! There was a missing character in one of the codes in our database that matches up with the codes you submit. If you try redeeming again, it should be working OK now. Two of us just checked both codes on that badge again to be sure.

@mariah: I had the same problem in Jump Events badge as irenzero. Now the badge shows the two codes but does not show the badge as earned.

In Mochimochi Kawaii badge, are some codes missing from items?! I am pretty positive I have the right items but there are no codes for clues 3,4,5.

@ seasonsall - you are right some codes didn't get added. Sorry about that! It's fixed now and if you go back to the items you thought were correct they should be there. Thanks for letting us know!

cool!

Shirley Temple taught me that there are 48 books with "cherry" in the title, no books with "maraschino" in the title or "Grenadine" in the title... how could I miss the first clue?! Any hints?

Wow those are like bonus points..Super star, Mega Star, Giga Star etc... Thanks alot!

Why isn't there a link from aadl.org to the JUMP page? If parents are not playing the summer game, how would they know that the page existed?

cool

I got the Super Star Master one!!! I had earned it already, but for some reason it wasn't giving it to me.
@Eli: Does entering the codes to a badge in different orders screw up the badge? I got all the codes to a badge, but I got the last one before the second one, and after I got the second one, it didn't show up. It just kept on saying I had, whatever, 80 percent left. :/

There's only one logical way to split the I of the Imperial Airways predecessor with the initials IAL, and that gives 1532 results. What am I doing wrong?

Is it possible to tag/review individual issues of a magazine? If not, could aadl change it. It would be helpful to know what a certain issue contains for future reference.

The A Challenger Appears is the best badge so far this summer. That one was a lot of fun to try and work out.

@Pumpkinscones, I completely agree about A Challenger Appears being a great badge, and my favorite so far this year. I learn so much following the badge quests. My hat is off to the person who designed it!

Cool

Is there a way to identify who is staff on the comments page? Would it be possible for all aadl staff- especially game staff- have some identifying marker?

@ wulfflynn & everyone,

Game staff here - re: the easiness of the Shirley Temple badges. Remember that the summer game is played by all ages - we have families playing with children as young as 3, grandparents playing with grandchildren, and everyone else in between. With that in mind we purposely created badges at a variety of difficulty levels. Knowing that Shirley Temple would potentially appeal to children is why these badges are easier and more accessible. We also want to give beginners to the game a place to start before moving on to the more challenging badges.

Hi wilfflynn - no need to be sorry at all! Just wanted to let you know how we plan the game. Questions are how we all learn and I'm sure others wondered the same thing and now they have the answer - so thanks for asking it!

The new Jump site rocks! I love it - it is so easy to use to find items to check out and keep up with upcoming events.

A cheap "trick" for gettting starring badges: I've been watching netflix for years, entering ratings for every movie I watch. It's easy to get a list of your ratings on Netflix and copying them over to AADL is fiddly but not hard, since both are on a five point scale. And those ratings entered right after watching a movie are probably more accurate than the ratings I'd come up with now based on my sometimes dim recollection of the film.

@Jan, thanks for the tip...I might even make it to 1000 ratings this year. It is getting harder and harder to do with each passing summer game, though, to find 1000 more items to rate in the catalog. The hard part is thinking of items I can rate: all the ones that come to mind first are the ones I have rated already.

It would be lovely if
1) there were some indication on the record that I had already rated an item before I rate it and see the "you got points" notice does not appear.
2) there were a catalog "juke box" that would suggest an item (to borrow or rate).

I'm not sure if you have the data or the programming in place to suggest items to patrons a la Netflix based on previous ratings, but either some form of that or a way for patrons to recommend items to each other more formally than a mention in a review would be great. Even a truly random juke box, with or without the ability to add constraints (e.g. only graphic novels, or graphic novels other than Marvel) would be useful for stumbling upon items. As it is, I do quests and stumble across items I want to check out that I never knew existed or were in the library collection.

@Jan & @Cheryl -

Thanks Jan, for showing just how much tagging/rating can add up the points. Sometimes it's easy to forget that just because it's not a lot of points for each one, though rating things on your checkout history does net you more points.

Cheryl - I'm right there with you on having a hard time finding things to tag/rate! While it would be nice to see that I've already rated an item on the item page, you *can* go under "My Account" and along the left side where it says "My Reviews/Tags", it also includes a list of what you've rated as well as what you've already tagged and reviewed, so that's helpful.

But yes, this being the third year of the summer game, those of us who are ummm.. avid players are bound to be running out of things to tag/rate. I'm also having a harder time coming up with lists to make that are actually USEFUL to people and not just lists simply for points. The points are of course the main reason I'm making the list, but I want the finished list to actually be something that people can find useful and not just things that can already be found when searching the catalog. The first year I made some lists for cookbooks, dividing them up by region/country and by food allergy, diet type, etc. I also made a list of Non-Rainbow Magic Fairy books for those who want fairy chapter books but not the Rainbow Magic series since that series is so extensive and can dominate the search results. I've found a few other things that I thought might be useful to others last year (Michigan Nature Guidebooks was one) and even fewer this year.

I think the "jukebox" feature or something similar is a neat idea. It'd be nice to get recommendations. It's so hard to find things I really like so having recommendations based on what I've taken out would be nice. :)

Hi everyone,

So just to speak to one enhancement that has been brought up - and something I as an avid player too would appreciate - being able to know if you have rated something already is something we can do, but unfortunately it won't happen this summer. It's doable, but IT is too swamped with game play and other projects to tackle it, but for next summer it should be a feature!

Attention! Would one of the people who earned the Street's Quest #3 Badge PLEASE help me? I have been stuck on this clue for weeks:

In the window of Frank Glazier’s building, look to locate a small neon sign,
Your code is the letters and numbers: the words that those glass tubes define.

I have looked and looked on all sides of the building and cannot find a neon sign. Is it still there? (Today was my 4th trip downtown.) Any hints?

@sara, I looked up the code you are looking for (Streets Quest #3, Glass Gazing, third code) in my history. I have not been downtown for a while and so I don't know if the sign in question has been removed or moved for absolute sure. I find it hard to imagine the sign you need is not still there, as it is pretty instrumental the the type of business and its services, especially the automated variety. Are you sure you have the right building at that location?

@cherylo - at this point, I'm not sure of anything. A couple of friends have looked as well, and have seen nothing (as far as neon signs in windows.) I no longer have the list of codes I have tried. I was looking at/in the Glazier building on Main.

@sara, so the business on the ground floor of the building you looked at is a bank, correct?

Maybe I should have you email me...I think if you look at my player page you can find my last name. My email address is [my first name].[mylastname]@gmail; if you send me a query I'll see if I can help you more off the chat.

@cherylo. I didn't even know we could see each other's pages. I looked on yours and discovered you are way high up on the leader-board, but it doesn't show your name (only cherylo.) I am looking in a bank. The only thing I can think of is that I haven't been there when it's been dark. But, I did look in every window- even around the corner. There was a lighted sign inside the door, but not neon, and it didn't work as a code.

@sara, if you send a message to cherylo@ umich. edu (remove spaces first), it will get to me. (I'm an alumna of the University of Michigan, and that alias forwards to one of my real email addresses), if Bookbird's help is not sufficient.

To all you summer gamers out there I am working on the Fly There badge and I am having great trouble finding the first codeword to the badge. I have Wikied up some info on what I believe could be the answers I am looking for but as I read more of the article I think I may have found a simular article but not the right one. I am wondering if any of you had the same problem and if you did I am wondering if you could give me a clue to find the right article so I can work on the badge.
Thanks so much for the help

for the fly there badge code #1, search the name of the early British commercial long range air transport company, operating from 1924 to 1939 and serving parts of Europe but principally the Empire routes to South Africa, India and the Far East, including Malaya and Hong Kong. it should have the initials IA

@BookBird I just looked up what should be the right codeword for clue # 1 for the fly there badge. When I typed in the answer I got over 400 options where to find the codeword so I think I am typing the answer the wrong was or I am not narrowing down the answer enough so I am wondering if you could give me a clue to help narrow down the answer.
Thanks so much for the help

We're glad to hear folks like the new Jump page! For now at least, we're doing a bit of a "soft launch" and making sure there are no big problems with it -- I imagine we'll start spreading the word a bit more after we make sure of that. Thanks for helping us roll it out! : )

To all you summer gamers out there I am working on the Fly There badge. I am wondering if any of you gamers out there could give me a few tips on how to find the first code word. I know the answer to the first question but I have entered it so many different ways in the catalogue I get any where from 24-454 answers to look through to find the code word and I have yet to find it. I am hoping you gamers can give me some more hints on how to narrow down my search.
Thanks so much for the help,
lmd3577

To all you summer gamers out there I am working on the A Challenger Appears badge and I am looking for the second codeword in the badge. I looked up the wiki article on the internet and it is very short and it does not give enough info to help. So I am hoping you can give me another clue on where I can find the codeword because it is very hard to find and I don't know that much French to decider the clue.
Thanks so much for the help,
lmd3577

@Lmd3577, I found the information in an English-language page on a French web site IIRC. Though my French might be good enough for these purposes, I have found that google translate is helpful when you are stuck on language issues. In summary, try google search instead of wikipedia alone.

the prizes in this year's summer game are so much fun. the picnic blanket rocks!

To all you summer gamers you there I am working on both the "Fly There" badge and the "Challenger Appears" badge. I am having a great deal of trouble finding the second code word in the "Challengar" badge and the first code word in the "fFly There" badge. I have Wikipedia up the Wiki page about the fly there badge but when I go to put in the anwser for the first code word I get over 400 options to look through so I am hoping some of you may have some tips to narrow down my search so I can find the first code word for the "Fly There" badge. I am having quite a bit of trouble finding the second code word for the "Challanger arrives " badge and I know part of my trouble is that I don't know enough French to understand certain phrases and I do have a translator on my electronic dictionary and it still does not help so I hope you gamers have some tips to help me throght this difficult badge.
Thanks so much for the help

I know this is kind of old, but I'm still having trouble with the third code on the Pink Panther badge, and the first Mrs. Norris one, and the last one for Alfred Hitchcock...Any advice for someone who's not a trivia master?

Wow! I was away for two weeks, and have sooo much to catch up on...badges, posts, game shop, events...

I am working on the last code for the Fly There Badge and looking for some help to narrow down my search results, or direction if I'm way of track. I figured out the predecessor with initials IAL, but when I separate the first word into two word (I* S****), I have 1,534 results to look through. Any suggestions? Thanks!

@VmT,
There's one more word you can add to the mix to get it down to a more reasonable number to look through. Alternatively, try adding quotation marks around the phrase you are currently searching, which also cuts the results dramatically. Do both those things together, and there is exactly one result.

Thanks for the tips cherylo!! Adding the quotation marks narrowed down the results. While I was sifting through the two-word search results, I openned another tab to see if I could figure out the three-word combination that would yield only one result...just for fun :-) I found the code in the two-word search results first, and now that I've seen the iitem, I doubt I would have come up with the three-word combination :-)

Hope all is well!

@wulfflynn , they aim for 6pm, but please be patient and gentle with all staffers. They want the badge drop to happen (and happen on time!) just as much as the players. While we wait, they are working furiously to get everything together.

It is possible to see the description of and/or read the first clue of some of the upcoming badges, if you know how. See that link on your player page that says [ See All SummerGame2013 Badges ]? No hints are available that way, though.

I know I'm the one who said to be patient, but I'm a little weirded out how quiet it is here. No new chat post yet, no commenters commenting furiously, pining for the badge drop post, only crickets.

Edited to add: POST AND THE NEW BADGE DROP SHALL APPEAR. :D

okay.... so for the "A Challenger Appears" badge, I found the name of the launch vehicle, and it is indeed the same as the French word for a gem. But searching the catalog for that French word, I get 32 results, and none of them has a game code on it. What am I missing?

"What precious gem is missing, and how do you say it in French? Search the catalog for that!" I found all kinds of sites that confim that the launch vehicle was "D-----t", which is also the French word for a particular gemstone. I used that as a keyword search, and also "d-----ts", and "d-----t-A" and "d-----t A", which was the actual rocket variant used, plus the English name for the gemstone in both singular and plural (which got me thousands of hits - I didn't check all of them!)

It's good to know that it doesn't seem to just be me, though.

@crwilley, I have email from Eli about this catalog item and your difficulty. Apparently, the record you need was suppressed from the catalog because there are no actual copies of it. He has un-suppressed it and protected it from being re-suppressed, but it won't show up in catalog search results until tomorrow according to his message If you still have trouble at that point, let me know, as he also provided me a direct link to the item.

@cherylo: Aha! When I searched this morning, I didn't find it either, but now, typing in the word again, I got the 33 results, and saw the correct one right away. Thanks for contacting eli about it!

@crwilley, I can't find it now either, including by searching the actual code, which has worked like a keyword search in the past. (I can't remember what the item it was attached to was, unfortunately.) Hey, @mariah or @eli...could you look into whether the second code of the Challenger Appears badge is still where is should be?

I can't find the first code in the "I'll Have a Shirley Temple" badge. Is the name of the ingredient M******** C******? Am I supposed to search the C? When I search that, I get lots of results, but I can't find the code. Do I have the wrong ingredient?

Also, I earned the "Fly There" badge, but I don't understand what the hint to the bonus means at all. Does anybody have an additional clue for me?
Thanks!

Yaldah,
Search just the M. It should be in the first item that pops up.

For the "Fly There" bonus, the big hint is the part in capital letters that was in the info that you got when you answered your last code. I knew exactly what it was referring to, which I guess shows my age, but you might have to look for where that quote is from. I'm guessing if you google those words you'll get it, but I haven't actually checked.

@Zekicmom: When I searched the M, I did indeed find the code, but when I redeemed it, I discovered that that code was actually the second code for that badge, instead of the first. I have now found all the "I'll Have A Shirley Temple" codes except for the first one. Is that the same fruit as the second? I am really confused. Well, thanks for helping me find the second code! :-)

For the "Fly There" bonus, I wasn't able to figure out who it is a quote from. Never mind. Thanks anyway.

@yaldah: let me try one more time to help.
For the Shirley Temple, google the name of the drink. On Wikipedia you'll find the recipe for it. In the list of ingredients and instructions it will say ".... And a splash of ________.". Find out what fruit that ingredient is made from and you've got the word you need to search the library catalog.
For the "Fly There" bonus, you really can just google the hint the library gives you. "R_______ M_ N____! (r...........r.........r.........r.......) " that will lead you to the source you need.

@Zekicmom: Thank you for helping me again! I've earned the Shirley Temple badge, finally! My problem was I had the wrong ingredient - the ingredient needed for the second code.

For the bonus, when I searched that, I kept coming up with various song lyrics?! Am I on the right track, or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks again for all your help.

I don't think you have to have read everything you tag. To rate or review something yes, but if for example you were tagging Garfield books, you wouldn't have to read all of them to know that "cat" would be an appropriate tag.

While helping my sister with some Jump badges, I noticed that clue for the second code for the "Jump Events" badge says to click on "Plan Your Visit" instead of "Storytimes and Events". I helped her earn the badge by clicking on the correct button, but the directions should be fixed.

I love the Mochimochi series. What a great way to get people out into the community and support local businesses! I had no idea Lexi's Toybox existed. I will definitely go back when I need to do some toy shopping.
