The true story behind a famous nursery rhyme
Now you can read the true story of Mary and her lamb, as told and illustrated in Will Moses' folk-art style. The real "Mary" was a 19th-century Massachusetts farm girl named Mary Elizabeth Sawyer, who nursed a newborn lamb back to health and won its woolly, unwavering loyalty. The lamb became her beloved pet, following her everywhere, even to school one day. John Roulstone witnessed the lamb episode and wrote the first stanza of the poem. Later Sarah Josepha Hale published it and added three more stanzas.
