Traverwood Branch Reopens at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, August 11

The Traverwood Branch will open at 10:00 AM, an hour later than usual today, Tuesday, August 11, due to an unexpected maintenance situation. We apologize for the inconvenience. All other locations will open as scheduled at 9:00 AM and will close at 9:00 PM.

Today I visited the Traverwood branch and along with another patron we discovered that the book return box had been removed. We talked to the head of circulation who said that it was done for safety reasons. He explained that someone had hit a pole while a car was parked. (There probaby has been more than one incident.)

Removing the box that is so convenient wasn't a very creative solution. I can think of three alternatives that would work.

1. Move the box out to the edge so that one can simply put the books into the box.

2. Move one of the handicapped spaces over to the next space and convert the current handicapped space into the a space reserved for Book Returns only.

3. Relocate the box to near the west end of the drive way. The passage way is one way and there is no way for a person to go around a car stopped while materials are being returned to the box. There worse that could happen is that a patron would be inconvenienced for a minute or two. A sign could be placed notifying people to watch for stopped cars.

That box was one of the most convenient features of the new branch, particularly in the winter. Punishing many patrons for the misbehavior of a few patrons doesn't seem to me to be the right solution.
