Videogame Panel Discussion: This Sunday!

by eli

The videogame industry is teetering on the precipice of the next console war. With Microsoft's Xbox 360 already established in the market, all eyes are on Sony and Nintendo, and what they'll announce at E3 in just a few short weeks. Sony's PS3 will be powerful and fast, but also embroiled in a disc format war could be disastrous for a product that may launch above $500. Nintendo's console, still codenamed 'revolution', has a radical new controller that offers intuitive play to a larger audience, a possible $199 pricetag, and a downloadable back catalog of 20 years worth of classic games. The all-important holiday season is fast approaching. Who will emerge victorious from the wreckage of the next console war? And, define 'victorious'!

COME SPECULATE WILDLY with a panel of gamers at Malletts Creek Branch on Sunday, from 1-3, featuring AADL-GT Season 1 Champion and Season 2 Runner-up, [gtplayer:143] (Stephen Savage), seasoned GT commentator and Season 2 comeback-story finalist [gtplayer:288] (Daniel Burgener), Lansing-based adult tournament competitor and gaming enthusiast Omokusaki (Zach Lark), and yours truly as your host and resident tattoo-bearing Nintendo Fanboy!

It will come to shouting! I'm certain of it. Hope to see you all there for some spirited, well-informed discussion of these important concerns.

Ooh. This sounds awesome. I'll be there.

Very exciting :-) Looking forward to it very much. What will the format be?

"Faulheit ist eine Tugend"
[gtlogo:VMC]

We'll start off with some questions I ask that the three of you (and a fourth mystery panelist I may choose from the crowd) each have a chance to answer. Then we'll have questions / assertions from the audience, maybe a few trivia questions for t-shirts, etc. We'll also spend some time making predictions for 2006 in the console market and in Season 3. It's gonna be pretty cool, I think, I hope we get a good turnout. Spread the word!

ooh! A fourth mystery panelist! Mysterious... Do you have someone in mind that you're planning on choosing from the crowd?

Speaking of the crowd, how big of a crowd are you expecting?

"Faulheit ist eine Tugend"
[gtlogo:VMC]

Meh, I'm a little concerned about the turnout. I will be thrilled with an audience of 20, I'm afraid it may be closer to 10. Bring your DS just in case we run out of stuff to talk about....

I don't have anyone in mind, but I'd like to have a fourth panelist. We'll see who turns up.

.... And again, I cannot, in fact, make it after all.... Sorry for confirming my attendance yesterday.
Instead, I will be raking leaves and doing other odd jobs in an effort to sell our old house. Which is important and all, but less interesting than the panel discussion will be....
Good luck, and may the best company (Nintendo) win!

In reply to by Pickwick the Second

Well, the panel was fun, but there were the same number of panelists as there were audience members (not including the three members of the library staff). It was an interesting discussion and people who didn't go missed out.

"TORTURIS EXUVIAS EUNT"

In reply to by omokusaki

Well, since my fellow panelists have chipped in. I agree. Fun discussion, although it tended to stray a bit from "the State of Gaming" to nostalgia, which isn't all bad, but since I didn't grow up with video games, I felt a little out of the loop with the older systems. (My first console was an N64, but I do go all the way back to original gameboy on portables) (speaking of GameBoy, the original Link's Awakening for the GameBoy (not the Color remake) gets an honorable mention for my all time favorite game behind OoT, FFVII and the other games on that level.)

"Faulheit ist eine Tugend"
[gtlogo:VMC]

I'm glad I could make it, the discussion definitely helped me get a better understanding of what the big deal was over various gaming platforms.

Not to my knowledge.

I have a question about the short story contest a while back if anyone knows anything about it. I got a letter saying that I was a finalist, but it didn't say how many finalists there were, or what the chances of being a finalist turning into a cash prize were. Does anyone know?

"Faulheit ist eine Tugend"
[gtlogo:VMC]

random question, Who was the fourth mystery panelist? Those random people? Eric? Edith? That other guy...(matt)? ME?!?!
Really, I don't get it.

Advent Children is out in America on DVD Yesterday!!!
I love it so much! (by now you can tell that I'm a FF7 finatic).
I'm sorry I didn't post this yesterday but I was too busy watching it!

Also, Daniel, did you finish ff7 yet? once you do then you can watch it... Same goes for you Ian. You can watch it when you beat it.

(but if you guys are lazy, you can watch the remnance of ff7 which is an extra on the DVD where they sum up the game in about 15 minutes using game footage from the more important parts)

I watched the English version of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children tonight. Meh. It looks fantastic in some spots, but it really lacks in the story department. Granted, I played the game almost ten years ago now, but even I was lost almost from the beginning. I can't imagine how my wife felt.

Well, per the press release...

"Introducing ... Wii.

As in "we."

While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.

Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.

Wii will put people more in touch with their games ... and each other. But you re probably asking: What does the name mean?

Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes this console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.

And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd.

So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you.

Because, it s really not about you or me.

It's about Wii.

And together, Wii will change everything."

It has "Independant Branding Agency" written all over it.

Wow.
Just freakin' <strong>wow</strong>.

Nintendo is vey lucky that I am a very big Nintendo fanboy and will still buy this no matter what, because this is a risky move. I suppose let's just hope that Nintendo designs the biggest killer app for release time, or they're going to have a hard time keeping up in this generation.

Oh, and once the Revoultion... oh, sorry, <strong>Wii</strong> comes out, I have only three words to say:

<strong>Online
Multiplayer
Goldeneye.</strong>

Heck yes.

Online Multiplayer Goldeneye....if Nintendo purchased the rights to the game instead of letting Rare have it.

Also, if someone isn't going to buy this system just because of it's name, then they don't deserve to call themselves a gamer.

In reply to by omokusaki

Hmmm, good point. If Nintendo has any sense at all, they'll spend as much as they have to to be able to have Goldeneye be one of the games that you can download. If they don't, it will be a crying shame.

And yes, I suppose that is true. But, with the name being "Wii" to signify their efforts to get other markets, the people who aren't gamers might be a bit less likely to buy it. I don't know, I just know that like I said, I know for a fact that I'm already going to buy it.

We spent so much time discussing how Nintendo was going to get people to switch the Revolution, but that was a huge waste.

Eli brought up a good point about how the VHS beat the betamax because of the name. Will a casual player buy a wii? No!

I think that nintendo put a wii shot in their foot making that announcement.

If nintendo wants to get rid of their kddie image they shouldn't have called it the wii.

Omokusaki you are right to an extent, but you have to admit that you probably wouldn't play a game called "kiddie-playground" or "Wee, fun on slides" unless it was really phenomenal.

"TORTURIS EXUVIAS EUNT"

In reply to by TurtlePerson2 (not verified)

Perhaps people will not purchase a Wii, but they may take a Wii.....

.....

...yeah..

And I would play a game called "Wee, fun on slides", especially if I had to use the controller to physically climb said slide and had fun on the way down.

TurtlePerson2 wrote:
<em>Eli brought up a good point about how the VHS beat the betamax because of the name.</em>

I'm pretty sure Eli was talking about "[w:HD-DVD]" being a much friendlier name than "[w:Blu Ray]" to the casual consumer. [w:VHS] beat [w:betamax] because JVC shared the standard and Sony didn't.

That being said, I think a name like "Wii" has a large potential for puns and words with "ii" in them. Similar to the "iPod" spawning "iEverything". It's almost viral.

Plus, it's just another indication of the market the Nintendo is going for: everyone. They are almost thumbing their collective nose at the men ages 17-30 market. That may be the #1 group of disposable income, but the total disposable income of all the other groups might be more.

<em>edit:</em>
I've just read a report speculating that this is all a front, and the REAL name will be announced at E3. Nintendo is denying that, of course. hmm....

/*== [:/ejk|ejk] ==*/

In reply to by ejk

I would certainly hope that it is all a front because Nintendo will lose almost all of the little market share they have left if they go with the Wii.

I just read an interesting news piece that said that Nintendo purposely named it the wii because it would get attention. I think that they might be right although I think that it might backfire on Nintendo. A lot of people are comparing the amount of "innovation" to the virtual boy. If Nintendo tries to make everything different than everyone else they will end up with another virtual boy.

Also one of the reasons I heard for the naming Wii is that it is accessible by people who speak any language, but the word wee means more than just a first-person plural pronoun over here.

EJK the 17-30 men market is where the money is. Those are the people who play games. I would expand the range to 10-30 men saying that everyone in that age group that is a non-nintendo fan that I have talked to about it hates the name. I really think that some of the hardcore nintendo fans on this blog need to back up for a second and look at it without bias. The name is Wii. As I heard one person say online, "There are some names that grow on you with time. This isn't one of them."

I really think that some of you would have defended any name that nintendo rolled out, including Nintendo Game Thing, N-MOM (Nintendo Machine Of the Masses)(similar concept to wii), Nintendo 64 Redux, or last, but not least Virtual Boy 2. I honestly believe that you would have backed any of these names, but the VB2.

Also having been on the blogs discussing the name, there is almost no one who likes the name. Most people are making fun of it or using various wii entendres. Chevy used to have a car called the Nova. It sold pretty well in America so they started selling it at dealerships at Mexico. No one working at Chevy knew enough Spanish to know that Nova translates to Spanish as no-go or it-doesn't-go. Japan did the same thing. I would've thought that some NOA person would have informed NOJ of the other meanings of wii before they announced it, but I guess not.

Well this is all my ranting, for now.

I think that this wii little incident has sealed my choice about whether or not to buy a future Nintendo console.

"TORTURIS EXUVIAS EUNT"
[img_assist|fid=126|thumb=1|alt=Turtle Clan Logo|caption=AADL-GT Turtle Clan]

Well, as I said to a guy at work today, even if the system was called "I'm stabbing you in the face and stealing your car" I would still buy it if it had some killer aps, despite its overtly violent threats.

I think too many people, including those on this bored, are focusing too much on the name and when more information comes out at E3 about what this machine will do and look like, many will still be focused on this whole Wii thing when in the end it doesn't matter.

And obviously they knew what "We" stood for in english. You can tell from the press release they sent along with the name change.

Stephen - I definately see your point, but I think that to say that this kills Nintendo is going too far. First off, omokusaki is right that they obviously considered it in English since it's based off of the English word "we", (and also the "ii" symbolizes I's coming together). I also agree with Omokusaki that there are a lot of people who would buy it regardless of the name. I saw a Nintendo spokesperson compare it to Virgin Mobile, which has a unique name that has now become completely normal associated with cell phones. Yes, no one likes the name, but it's just one more thing that Nintendo will need to overcome with an amazing system like they keep promising. They claim that the name will make more sense once we actually can play the system. So my vote is lets not rush to any judgements until after E3. Nintendo is making some big promises that this is going to blow everything else out of the water. If they're right then the name won't matter. If they aren't, then they were probably screwed anyways.

"Faulheit ist eine Tugend"
[gtlogo:VMC]

Good point sir, good point.

And it's times like these that I wish the "edit" functionality of this BOARD was consistant, then I could change "bored" in my last post to "board" and not make myself look like an idiot.

In reply to by omokusaki

I don’t like the name but what does a name have to do with the product. I can’t say I liked the name of any system. I like many system but I’m not fond of there names, this is just a name people are going to act childishly around because everyone knows what the double meaning is. Can you really name something that doesn’t have a double meaning? Is naming something Xbox or PS2 really better? Microsoft named there product ‘box’ and then said “it has to be cooler, lets put another x in there to draw people’s attention”. PS2 could easily be referred to as PMS or Poop station. It doesn’t take much to realize that any name can be manipulated to match the public opinion of the product. So this name makes it easy so what. The Beatles came out with The White album. In a Racially divided time they release the white album and look how well it sold. Sorry for being cliché but “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”(Shakespeare). You can’t judge a book by its cover; you have to look at its contents.

Also I know someone whose last name is Wei for god’s sake and guess what no one makes fun of her for it.

The Nintendo Wii? Thats NOT RIGHT!!! Should i get a PS3 just 4 the final fantasy 7 remake, or get the "revolution" for the beastly nintendo FPS's that should come out? (Now I can confuse half the kids at forsythe by asking them if they're gona get a Wii 0_o)
Doom... Shalt... BLAZE!!![gtlogo:SDK]

FOR THE LAST TIME, THERE IS NO FF7 REMAKE!!!! THAT WAS JUST A REMAKE OF THE BEGINNING MOVIE TO SHOW OFF THE GRAPHICS POWER OF THE PS3!!! (Brian says its called a graphics demo, he says: "basically if Square made FF7 on the PS3, this is how pretty it would be")

Too many rumors have gone on about the ff7 remake and I am here to stop them. Think about this for a second: If there was anything about ff7 being done (like a new spinoff), I would've known before Tetsuya Nomura even thought about it.

STOP GETTING YOU'RE HOPES UP!! IT <strong>WONT</strong> HAPPEN!!!

AND DON'T START THAT BULLCRAP ABOUT IT BEING DONE ON THE PSP! IT WON'T WORK UNLESS YOU GET AN EMULATOR TO SOMEHOW WORK ON IT!

I'm sorry I was way too hostile at your post Doomblaze. My point is don't buy the PS3 so you can get an FF7 remake. Square Enix has thought about it but they dismissed it. It wont happen.

Sorry to debunk your whole rant there Evil Bus Driver, but per the latest issue of Game Informer (that has Red Steel on the cover), a remake of Final Fantasy VII for PS3 is currently in the production phase and will actually switch battle systems from the quasi turn-based system of VII to the real time system introduced in the upcoming Final Fantasy XII.

And you believe GI?

Since the Tech Demo happened, there is a chance but it wont happen for a long time anyways. The tech Demo was to show how pretty the graphics are on the PS3, not a teaser for a new FF7 Game.

ok ya, that was kinda harsh, but the Wii is 4 me if what u say is true (im assuming it is). My bro kept on ranting about the remake so i figured there was one, but if there isn't, ill just have 2 get/play FF7 sometime soon... I dont think it would be done well on the PSP if that was even possible. They could do the intro movie, but they would probably mess up the game somehow.
OK IGNORE MY COMMENT IF U DONT KNOW WHO 2 BELIEVE (Evil bus driver or omokusaki)
Doom... Shalt... BLAZE!!![gtlogo:SDK]

Just get FF7 on the PS1. It's cheaper. Also whether or not the remake will happen or not, Tetsuya Nomura says if there was a remake, it would take at least 5 years with a team of 300, so don't get your hopes up any time soon. Seriously, I'm problbly the biggest FF7 fanboy on this forum or in Michigan but I'm not buying the PS3 just to have an FF7 remake.

EDIT: Well, you can even borrow mine. Ian (Duck) is done with Disc 1 (he is also borrowing it) so if you want to use it you can.

Oh yeah, I havn't commented on the Wii yet. Just the name Wii isn't going to make me not want to get it. The Wii has no effect on me. Alright, If I do get a Revolution (I most likely will), I still can't call it the Wii. I think I'm too used to calling it the Revolution. Is anyone else like this?

BTW, who is your brother Doomblaze? Is he in the GT?

EBD - Everybody said that same thing about the Dolphin. ("I still can't call it the Gamecube. I'm still used to calling it the Dolphin.") Now very few people even remember that it used to be the Dolphin. I suspect that it will be the same way with Wii. (Although, to prove your point, I definately accidentally typed Revolution and had to delete it and switch to Wii)

Good point about the dolphin and the wii very strong point. I dont think the name should matter. People have bought an x box what is appealing about a box with an x. I think what will matter is how good it is.

So, the PS3's controller is also going to be motion-sensitive. This might just spell doom for our little friend the Wii...

---
"OK, next year we're going to change the tournament name from AADL-GT to AADL-G<strong>R</strong>... "Goat Rodeo!!!" - Eli <strong>
5000th comment poster!</strong>[gtlogo:VMC]

The PS3's controller is not motion-sensitive, just tilt-sentitive. It will be much like the "nunchuck" of the Wii being limited to tracking only things such as pitch and yaw. It will not detect movement or pointing like the "revmote", so games where motion is important (like the tennis game demonstrated yesterday at the Nintendo press conference) will only be possible on the Wii. Other games that only need the tilt functionality, like a driving game for instance, could function the same way on both systems though.

Right then, thanks for that. I only saw a bit of the G4 stuff yesterday, as I got back from Cedar Point and just watched the tape a bit before I went to sleep, so yes, that is an important disticntion. I think the Revolution will take a bit of getting used to, but once we all get a feel for how it actually works, I have a feeling it's going to work very well.

I know that now is probably not the best time to post something non-E3 related, but remember how at the panel discussion, I said that Sony and Microsoft are making their systems multi-media, which wasn't something I wanted in gaming? My little brother just came home from a meeting about his 8th grade class trip, and they are banning PSPs, but not DSs. Why? Because PSP can play movies, and they're afraid of kids bringing innapropriate movies. So yet another advantage of keeping gaming with gaming and movies with movies and not blurring the line.

"Faulheit ist eine Tugend"
[gtlogo:VMC]

I have two problems with SSBB. Snake is third party and doesn't belong in the game. Also Brawl sounds less intense than melee, but it looks like a fun game other than that.

"TORTURIS EXUVIAS EUNT"

In reply to by TurtlePerson2 (not verified)

Well, Nintendo is heading in a slightly different direction with this itertaion of Smash Bros. Solid Snake is already in the game, but Nintendo hinted that there may be more third party characters in the final version of the game. I believe Nintendo is turning the Smash franchise into more of a “Nintendo System Fight” rather than just a first party character battle. So once the whole thing is said and done we may see other characters like Sonic, Leon Kennedy (Resident Evil 4), or Soma Cruz (Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow) fighting along side Snake and the rest. I would much rather have totally unique characters such as these than unlocking basically a copy of a regular character with a few modified moves (i.e. Dr. Mario, Pichu, etc).

Having some third party characters would be refreshing, a little out of place but refreashing. I hope they balance the characters better in Brawl because some of the Melee characters were just overpowered compared to others.

"Badges? We ain't got no badges! We don't need no badges! I don't have to show you any stinking badges!"\
[gtlogo:VMC]

I agree. I'm freaking out about Snake. And Sonic would be absolutely awesome, especially after all of the false rumors about being able to unlock Sonic in Melee.

"Faulheit ist eine Tugend"
[gtlogo:VMC]

I, for one, think it would be the most incredibly awesome thing if they put Leon Kennedy in SSBB. That, of course, is because I love Resident Evil 4. I think that they shouldn't put too many characters in the game that use mainly guns (i.e. Snake, Leon, etc.), because an SSB character shouldn't be all projectile attacks (at least I don't think so). However, I'm sure that the good people at Nintendo will figure out a way to balance these characters against the ones they already have. And yes, it would be nice if they put in a lot more totally different characters, rather than some that are very similiar to others (as stated before).

I like these lines about the Wii a lot. "The Virtual Console also will feature a "best of" selection from Sega Genesis titles and games from the TurboGrafx console (a system jointly developed by NEC and Hudson). It also will be home to new games conceived by indie developers whose creativity is larger than their budgets." and "Wii also can communicate wirelessly with Nintendo DS.". That makes me a happy camper, ski trip happy. I don't really care if it's called the Wii, I'm Scottish, if I can get Zero-Wing, Toejam and Earl, Ghouls'n Ghosts, Michael Jackson Moonwalker and some other hard to find/acquire games.

Don't count on the Wii being able to read CD's and DVD's. The fact that it can read 12-centimeter and 8-centimeter disks might limit the hardware to much. You'll have to wait for them(nintendo) to address that issue.
[gtlogo:VMC]

How come this blog has turned to talk about gaming markets instead of the upcoming tourtament.

"If you don't offer them something that has value to them now, you're going to be irrelevant to them for the rest of their lives. It's not a risk we can afford to take."

Because everything going on at E3 is much more interesting than the next upcoming tournament, which is still a ways off. Besides that, this deals with the future of gaming, whereas the next tournament will still be on those old, outdated, <strong>current-Gen</strong> systems.

:-P

I don't know though. If it could read video dvds (i know that in some ways that is redundant) they would advertise it. I feel that if the Revolution could read DVDs it would help its sales since it would allow Nintendo to have one more thing to advertise to the group that they are going after.

Also, I realized today that SSB to SSB:M made very few changes other than adding characters, adding a few moves, adding a few courses, and adding a few new modes. In the PC world that is called an expansion pack, yet SSB:M managed to sell very well. I wonder if SSB:B will add anything to the franchise other than long overdue online play becuase the graphics didn't seem to have been improved greatly. Right now it has expansion pack written all over it, but who cares. I think that the online play would be worth the price for a fan even if it should've existed on the Gamecube.

"TORTURIS EXUVIAS EUNT"

I think that technically yes, it <strong>could</strong> be considered an expansion pack, but it isn't due to the system switch inbetween the games' releases. A lot more than just characters and levels were added to Melee. They added whole new 1-P modes, lots of variations on multiplayer modes, and a lot of other stuff. I personally think that the addition of online play (<strong>Free</strong> online play, no less, kudos to Nintendo for that) is reason in and of itself to call SSB:B a whole new game.

I don't think anyone plays the 1-P modes for any reason other than to unlock things. Also some PC games add multiplayer as an expansion. (Some examples are Civ 3 and HL to a certain extent.) But I do agree with you that if treat SSB:B as if SSB:M never came out it certainly warrants its $50-$60 price.

sry if anyones asked this already but im to lazy to read all the posts so when are the DVDs coming out, and when they do will it be the whole season or just the finals?
also i was messing around and messed up the thing always at the end of a post so what is it?
and finaly: did the clan cup with mario on it not exist or did u just forget to give it to us eli?

We need a new thread devoted to the discussion of E3. This thread is still here for something that happened almost a month ago. It's also getting old and is almost bumped off the axis page. If anyone wants me to, I can e-mail Eli and let him know.

From what I can tell, I saw him for 5 min.s at an event last week, he's rather busy with some other stuff. You know the GT stuff is like a 1/20 of his full job.

No Pickwick, you do that somewhere else.

Pickwick, it's not that nobody wants to discuss politics, I'm sure some of us do, but it's rather off-topic, and the library intends to remain as apolitical as possible, so we're not likely to post threads intended to spark a political debate.

TP2, Nintendo has said that the graphics hardware for the Wii is not yet finalized; word is, the final unit may be even smaller than what we've seen already. However, it's clear that the Wii is only incrementally more powerful than the gamecube in terms of graphics hardware; reportedly, all the demos at e3 were <a href="http://wiinintendo.net/?p=176&quot; title="Whaddaya wanna bet this revelation leads to another prediction of nintendo's demise from TP2? =)">running on gamecubes</a>.

Nintendo has essentially opted out of the fill rate / pixels-per-second / mip-map-metrics arms race, and decided instead to just make good games. Maybe I'm just a fogey, but I've played several gamecube games like f-zero, pikmin 2, monkey ball, RE4, chibi-robo, Super Mario Sunshine, etc, and thought, "I don't think that the graphics need to be any better than this." Sure, they <em>could</em> be better, and eye candy is nice, but it doesn't really add any play value to the game. We've just been conditioned to think that it does.

Now, as the owner of a shiny new <a href="http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/S…; title="You may covet it. This type of expenditure awaits you in the wilds of adulthood.">HDTV</a>, I'm a little disappointed that the Wii won't support anything higher than 480p resolution in principle, but the fact is that 480p looks pretty dang good, and I also wouldn't rule out an HD-Wii down the line, similar to Nintendo's handheld habits.

I agree that it's a little weird to have Snake (or any 3rd party characters) in a super smash bros game, but I think it's cool for the series to go in that direction, especially if it results in sonic as a playable character, which would be drop-dead AWESOME. Heck, as far as you whippersnappers are concerned, Pit might as well be a 3rd party character. However, there is no way that SSBB will have anything other than a T rating, and it's not like it's firearms that make that difference.

Anyway, sorry I've been around so little lately... I did something like 9 speaking engagements in 4 weeks, so I've been scrambling to stay on top of email and such.

Also, we didn't really have a mystery panelist since it wasn't really a panel, although I sort of had EJK in mind if need be. Also, I do agree that my tendency to wax nostalgic got the better of me, but you know, I am over 30, and prone to such behavior. =)

I think that using a real gun represents a more realistic violence. The more realistic the violence the less likely ESRB is to give the game an E10 rating. If they can get that E10 rating their sales will improve because most parents see E10 and think E.

The comment I made about graphics not being very good was not because you need graphics to play a game. It was because I don't think that the Revolution will be any better than my computer. Any other console I've ever bought was better than my computer when I bought it. If this one isn't then in many ways Nintendo is charging me for something that I already have.

Except that they're really not, because I can guaran-darn-tee you that nobody's going to make very many motion-sensitive games for the PC ever. And certainly, nobody is ever going to make a Super Smash, Mario Kart or even Mario game for the PC (at least not legally). Just because a console doesn't have better graphics than your PC doesn't mean a darn thing in the long run, because about the only thing that the PC will be good for is FPSs and World Of Warcraft-esque games.

I'd also put RTSs and TBSs but thank you for saying what I thought tom. Also you people have to notice that as graphics increase release speed decreases. Good games with top of the line graphics once only took a few months to produce now they take years, what’s next a decade between games. I’m sorry that dog won’t hunt. I'd much rather play a good squeal for a game while I still can remember what it was like playing it. Good graphics are the most complex and tedious part of the programming of a game because they require an artistic touch: When you have greatly improved graphics you have to deal with way longer production time. If they don't spend longer to get those better graphics then you can bet they cut corners on other aspects, gameplay and storyline suffer the most but it's not limited to them. Do you really want to just look at it like you do a movie or do you want to have fun. Half the time I play a game I don't pay attention to the color and texture of my surroundings but my current gameplay situation. Frankly I like to have a challenging game that makes me think then one where I just sit in a stupor watching while repeating arbitrary button sequences over and over again.

Tom you missed my point. I said that Nintendo is charging for hardware I already have. Not for an experience I already have. What I said is that my computer will probably be about as powerful as a Revolution. The box they are making will cost money. The box itself is hardware that I already have. Therefore Nintendo is charging me for something I already have.

I agree with you that a graphics don't make the game. I run most of my games on low to get a high frame rate because I care more about gameplay than graphics, but occasionally great graphics will add to a game's experience.

Duck the flooding of the gaming market with sequels isn't a good thing. Earlier I heard that innovation was very important to the gaming world so I would assume that sequels are less likely to innovate since they are generally the same as an old game, but with new graphics and a few gameplay changes.

By the way a lot of companies license a graphics engine so it really isn't the most tedious time of development. I'm playing America's Army at this very moment. This game represents why PC is better (for me at least). The game has great graphics, but can be turned down low so that almost anyone's computer can handle it. It is free (Nintendo shutters at the thought of releasing a free game). It has excellent online multiplayer. It has honor levels allowing you to feel like you aren't just wasting your time. It licensed the Unreal 2 engine which means that the developers aren't wasting time on a new graphics engine.

I understand where you guys are coming from because I used to be a Nintendo fan boy too. Then I started playing PC games at a friend's house when I was 13 and I haven't gone back. I own close to 20 games for gamecube, but for some reason I only play one of two or three games for PC. Why? Because the replay value offered by online play combined with the modding community (which I don't think will ever appear on consoles) adds to the replay value of PC games.

I have Star Wars: Empire At War which has great graphics. Using an innovative feature called the battle cam, I can watch the battle go on in a cinematic view. This combined with fraps (a program that allows me to record my gameplay and sound (this type of thing costs a lot of money on consoles). Because the graphics are so good I could create my own reinactment of a star wars movie.

Duck if you have ever heard of the UT series (not everyone knows about these, but should) they popped out games frequently, but they realized that they needed something fresh and that is why it was UT03 then UT04 and now UT07.

By the way storyline is only important in some games. I don't think that the lack of storyline in BF2 hurt its game play at all. Nor did the lack of story in AA ruin it. However, the story in SW:KOTOR2 sucked me in and made that game good.

Duck the last thing I have to say to you is that if you are saying that FPSs or RTS are just repeated button sequences please throw away your copy of melee and MK:DD. I have found MK:DD to just be button sequences. Sure there is strategy, but very little. I just played a game of AA where my team was outnumbered 2-1, but we still fought them off using smoke grenades and having our AR fire into the smoke holding them off while we flanked them. Tell me that that is repeating an arbitrary button sequence over and over again.

Also I probably won't make it to the tournament tommorow because of a conflict in my schedule.

Wow this was long. I hope I got my point across.
