The Visitor on DVD (and Blu-ray)

by manz

I missed The Visitor at the Michigan Theater last spring and I was happy to finally see it. The film stars Six Feet Under’s Richard Jenkins, who is up for an Oscar for his role as Walter. It is wonderful to see Jenkins finally get the attention he deserves. He effortlessly portrays a disenchanted college professor caught up in the boring routine of “teaching” one class and “working” on his next book, while haplessly searching for a piano teacher that is as good as his deceased wife. He gets sent to a conference in New York against his will and it ends up being exactly what he needed and more. Upon entering his old and rarely occupied by him apartment, he is surprised to find a young couple living there.

This chance encounter forms a friendship and an awakening that will positively change Walter forever, as he gets wrapped up in helping them get out of trouble with Immigration. It really is a touching story that shows how necessary and wonderful human interaction can be and what we can learn from each other, whether we are looking for a connection or not. Similarly engaging, and also by director Tom McCarthy, is The Station Agent. File under: humanity.
