Three writers of note have died this week

by sernabad

Novelists John Mortimer and Hortense Calisher and poet W.D. Snodgrass all passed away this week.

On Tuesday, January 13th, Calisher and Snodgrass died. Calisher, 97, wrote two dozen novels and short stories, emphasizing darker themes of isolation, especially in families. Her last novel, Sunday Jews, was published in 2002.

Snodgrass, who had just turned 83 on January 5th, won a Pulitzer Prize for his very first collection, Heart’s Needle, published in 1959. Its major poem is a wrenching tribute to his young daughter from whom he was separated due to divorce.

Mortimer, creator of the beloved Horace Rumpole series, died in his sleep this morning. Rumpole defended Britain’s criminals and referred to his wife, Hilda, as She Who Must Be Obeyed, to the delight of Mortimer’s devoted fans. Rumpole was a natural for a wildly popular BBC series. Mortimer was 85.
