Andrew Wyeth, iconic American painter, has died

Andrew Wyeth, creator of Christina’s World and the Helga series, died today where he was born, in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.

Wyeth, the son of illustrator N.C. Wyeth, was noted for underlying themes of melancholy and muted colors. The Helga series created stir when it was learned that the nude model, a German émigré, was not his wife Betsy.

President George W. Bush awarded Wyeth the National Medal of the Arts in 2007.

Wyeth was 91.
