Mystery author giant, Tony Hillerman, has died

Tony Hillerman, who championed the Southwestern Navajos in his long-running mystery series featuring Sgt. Jim Chee and Liet. Joe Leaphorn, died yesterday in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Millions of devoted fans learned about the richness of Native American traditions and rituals which Hillerman respectfully brought to life in his mysteries that showcased the clash of the modern world with the ancient ways.
The first of the series, Blessing Way (1970), introducted the older cynical Joe Leaphorn, lawman and anthropologist. Jim Chee, younger and more spiritual (he studies to become a medicine man), made his first appearance in book number 5, People of Darkness. Their first joint appearance was in Skinwalkers (1986).The final entry, Shape Shifter (#18), was published in 2006.
Mr. Hillerman was 83.
