Home » The Future Animanga Clubs: More of what you want
Submitted by Edith Wharton on Tue, 12/06/2005 - 12:03am.
If anyone has specific manga you want to talk about, or anime you want to see, write your ideas down here. I will be taking them into consideration for upcoming Animanga club programs.
Just to let you know, we will be having a Naruto-themed program, with dibs on new library copies of the manga (sorry, giving away a lot of free manga, which I would prefer, is expensive!). I don't have the exact Animanga Club date for that set yet, but keep your eyes open for the new Axis (coming soon!) and mark your calendars accordingly.

Remember when I was at the library that one time and I saw you and we talked about events we could have? Remember the Rumiko Takahashi idea? We could have one day for Urusei Yatsura (my favorite :D), one day for maison Ikkoku, one day for Ranma, and ane day for Inuyasha. Maybe another for her short stories or something. I don't know.
Also, we need an event for old anime. Like anime from the 80's. I LOVE anime from the 80's. Urusei Yatsura... Touch... Dr. Slump... Kimagure Orange Road... Bubblegum Crisis... aaahhhhhhh.

Oh, man. Orange Road is SO awesome and not as well known as it ought to be. I had fan subs from the early 90's, it was great to watch the fan subbers get bitter and start inserting editorial comments as the series wore on.

*L* Fan subbing is an art, its always interesting to see what the "official" translations turn out to be.
I love the slightly older stuff work too. I don't even know if we can get the Orange Road manga here, but I've seen some of the series. I would love to have an excuse to buy some Bubblegum Crisis...

Hyper Otaku.. the two words seem to go together nicely.
I just bought books 1-8 of Full Metal Panic!
My x-mas present to me.
Yay! ^_^

Sir, I must inquire as to whether, in the usage of the term "Shoopuf," you intended to describe a creature appearing, be it in howsoever a transitory state, in the product, intended for placement within an electronic recreational device known as the "Playstation 2", known, colloquially, as "Final Fantasy X.

I advise against putting sir in a comment unless you are sure of said person's gender. Just my opinion, you understand.
We should have something on Megatokyo!!! Rabid fan is I.

Hyper and otaku go well together? I know a certain person who only dreams about getting manga from Borders. And you should just see me when I get new manga. Wildly happy, then deeply concentrating as I settle down to block out the world outside.

What is Full Metal Panic about? Explain, por favor.
Submitted by Sir Ducksalot on Tue, 12/13/2005 - 7:33pm.
Full Metal Panic is a mech romance with a bodyguard male lead that doesn't display emotions. It's an enjoyable series.
Yeah telling someone to not use Sir then proceeding to use Spanish and yoda speak. The person Pickwick was referring to uses Isaac as their name which would imply they are male. I mean even if Pickwick did get the gender wrong he at least made an attempt to make a completely comprehensible and semi-formal statement. I've seen you have made many spelling errors in the half a day you've been here, while I’ve never seen Pickwick spell a single thing wrong. I would prefer people making clean grammatically correct posts over AOL speak. This is a library blog after all.

Good Morrow!
Many thanks for the vote of confidence in my reliability as it relates to spelling and grammar, Goodsir Ducksalot, but I must confess to having been in error one time at a minimum with regard to the former during the eleven-week course of my tenure here. As you say, the name which the person in question has elected to apply to themselves would tend to indicate to the unprejudiced observer that they are of a certain gender.
On a different note: Is it true that manga books are read in a direction diametrically opposed to that of most literature sold in the United States?

Yes they're read right to left and can have sporadic layouts that confuse early readers (like me). It takes some time to get use to it, but it's no worse then subtitles or interpretive dance. Well no harder then subtitles atleast.

*Gush Gush*
Sir D. is right, the story involves mechs, school uniforms, teenage bodyguards, psychic powers, assassins, and North Korea. I love it!
Yes, the layout is hard to deal with, it's like you're learning a new language. You may not be reading Japanese, but you're reading English with a foreign cadence and a very different visual narrative than a traditional American comic strip or comic book. Even the plot cues are set up in a different way than most of us are used to. I recommend reading a book of Manga, or several, and then picking them up again after your brain has had some time to grow new neural pathways.. so a day or two later. If could take you a few times to really get it.
oh-kay I need to go to bed. I need to write a paper before MC Otakon tomorrow night!
Good night!

We should really do more with less known manga, such as The Violinist of Hameln, Suikoden, D Gray Man, et cetera... Also, I think it would be spiffy to get some untranslated manga~ And we should /so/ watch Slayers.
Just random thoughts~!

As for less known Manga.. mmm I will contemplate this.

Actually, Sir Ducksalot, I know Isaac very well and she is, in fact, a girl. Isaac is her NICKNAME. Just wanted to let you know that!
Anyway...
I agree that untranslated manga is spiffy! Get Touch! It's... so... GOOD!

Apologies, then, are to be expressed for the error.

But, the English Language doesn't have a neuter pronoun so technically if you don't the person's gender you are to refer to them as male. It's just a dumb English grammar rule. Someone really should create a few neuter pronouns.
