GT Returns! Game & Plan Meetup and SSBM Regulation Tourney Tuesday!

by eli

The off-season. Cold. Lonely. Lugubrious. Will it ever end? Of course it will, and there's no better evidence for this assertion than the upcoming GT Game & Plan Meetup and Super Smash Brothers Regulation Throwdown, Tuesday 2/26 starting at 3 PM at the Malletts Creek Branch. We'll start with a healthy dash of open play to shake out the melee cobwebs before getting into the big questions about the 2008 GT Season. Then, from 6 - 8:30, we'll have a Super Smash Bros. Melee Regulation throwdown for grades 6 and up. Don't miss these events; with the age of Melee drawing to a close, there's a lot to talk about for next season, and perhaps a parting farewell to the game that's enthralled us all for so long. See you Tuesday!

2007 AADL-GT Season Wrapup, and Awards Banquet this Friday!

by eli

This past weekend, the Downtown Library played host to the most intense event in town: the 2007 AADL-GT Super Smash Double Dash Grand Championship and Festival of N00bs! With some truly fierce competitors lined up to play, a ferocious afternoon of multiplayer mayhem was upon us, and the results, while disappointing to some, did not disappoint spectators, as the competition reached a fever pitch in the final round, which featured two members from each of this season's two super clans: [gtplayer:382] and [gtplayer:788] of Clan US, and [gtplayer:197] and [gtplayer:736] of the Brothers of Maplewood squaring off on the most unpredictable track in Kartdom, the infamous Baby Park. Read on to see what happened, and for full details of the AADL-GT Awards Banquet and Clan Cup, coming this Friday, 12/21 at 6 PM at the Downtown Library!

Championship Weekend is Upon Us!

by eli

It's mid-December, and you know what that means... the AADL-GT 2007 Grand Championships have arrived, the culmination of months of preliminary rounds with big prizes on the line! But first, a warm-up Super Smash Bros. Regulation Tournament for Low and Bottom Tier Characters only, Friday Night 12/14 at 6 PM. Then, the action continues on Saturday 12/15 with the Wildcard tournament for grades 6-12 at Noon, and then the 2007 Grand Championships starting at 2:00. Then, the weekend wraps up with a tour through the Mario universe at the Mario-Rama, Sunday 12/16 from 1-4 PM for All Ages!

The biggest news is that huge thanks are due to Nintendo of America, who have donated a brand-new, even-harder-to-get-a-year-later Wii for the grand prize winner on Saturday! The prize pool also includes an iPod Nano, an iPod shuffle, and a Nintendo DS! Read on for more details...

2007 Grand Championships: Coming December 15th!

by eli

With the end of the regular season behind us, and the 2007 Grand Championships just days away, it's time to savor. Savor the calm before the maelstrom. SAVOR IT. The end of the season is nigh, and with it, an end to a season marked forever by the dominance of one amazing clan: The unstoppable CLAN US. US owned every event again at round 4, even storming back to win at Donkey Konga and claim their third Clan Battle title of the season.

Now, with US securely seated atop the single player and clan leaderboards, there's only one question heading into the Grands: Can US be beaten? At all? By anybody? Come to the Grand Championships at the Downtown Libary on 12/15 to find out! Read on for full tournament details.

First off, the rumors are true... the warm-up Super Smash Bros. throwdown the night before the Grands, on 12/14, will be a Low Tier tournament, so better train up your DK and Ness and such.

Then, I've decided to move the Clan Cup to the first feature of the Grudge Buffet on the night of 12/21. That means that the Clan Season continues through the Grand Championship and GC scores and bonuses will count towards final clan standings. Hopefully you guys are all planning on coming to the Grudge Buffet; it will be a very cool event and the Clan Cup will give it a great start.

For the Clan Cup, Clans 5-8 will each send 4 players into 4-player Mario Kart BATTLES! The two clans with the most wins after two rounds of battle will advance to face clans 3 and 4 in smash singles. The two winning clans from those matchups will face clans 1 and 2 in one surprise game, and the winners of those two matches will face off in another surprise game to determine which clan wins the 2007 Clan Cup. Each member of the winning clan will win a Clan Cup trophy plus a $50 game with a target gift receipt.

OK, back to the Grand Championships. First, I've marked the prequalified players, those who have placed 4th or better in any event during the season. You can see that on the full leaderboard. In addition, we will also welcome anyone in the top 32 into the Grand Championship brackets (that's only 9 more players). The Wildcard Tournament, or as we often call it, the Festival of Noobs, will begin at 12:30 on Saturday, 12/14, using the dual format from last season; two rounds each of 4p smash and 4p kart, and then cutting out the bottom half of players based on score. One change is that we will be breaking ties for place in smash matches based on kills, then damage given, so no more second-place pacts.

8 players will advance out of the Wildcard tournament to join the prequalified players for more sets of 2 rounds each, smash and kart. Our final round will indeed be one round of smash, one round of kart. The winning 4 players will pick from a prize pool including: A Nintendo Wii (or a $250 giftcard), an iPod Nano, a Nintendo DS, and (for 4th place!) an iPod Shuffle.

At the Grudge Buffet on 12/21, we'll have the Clan Cup, presentation of awards such as MVP and Rookie of the Year, plus grudge matches suggested by you. Let me know if you have any questions, and we'll see you at the Grands!

One final note. Our database is missing the results from last month's Mario Kart Singles final race. Does anyone remember who the top four were? I'm pretty sure Lain won't still be atop the standings once we get those scores in....

Black Friday Pokémon Showdown!

by eli

Are you a Pokémon trainer? Do you think your Pokémon are pretty tough? Wouldn't you like to know for sure? AADL is pleased to provide an opportunity for the best and most enthusiastic Pokémon trainers from in and around Ann Arbor to come together, test their mettle, and see if they've got what it takes to make it to the finals of the most exciting Pokémon event in town. It's our first-ever Black Friday Pokémon Tournament, this Friday, 11/23, from Noon - 5 PM at the Downtown Library. Bring your DS and your copy of Pokémon Diamond or Pearl with your Pokémon ready to rumble, or try our house Pokémon if you don't have the game. A portion of this event will also be recorded and broadcast on Comcast channel 18 on Saturdays 11/24 and 12/1 at 3PM, so be sure to tune in, and read on for full details!

We'll start out with qualifying rounds in the DS union room, which means you'll need 2 Pokémon at level 30 or below to make it through the early rounds. The trainers with the most wins in their qualifyting battles will move on to 4-player, anything-goes pools, doing a double battle with 3 pokemon. We'll have prizes for the best overall players and the best level 50 and under players. We'll also be needing some Pokémon experts to do color commentary during the broadcast. Also, because the event is broadcast, please bring a signed release form if you haven't already.

As for GT updates, sorry for the delay in the Round 4 writeup... I blame Galaxy (62 stars). Round 4 and full GC details are coming next week. In the meantime, does anyone know what is up with those little bag-like guys that leave footprints and disappear whenever you get too close? WHAT IS UP WITH THOSE GUYS?

So, if you haven't already submitted a release form, be sure to bring a signed one! Then, the weekend wraps up on Sunday, 11/11, with an All-Ages DDR Tournament from 1 - 4 PM. Come check it out and avoid raking the leaves you're supposed to be raking this weekend!

Also, come back the day after thanksgiving for our first-ever Pokémon Battle Revolution Tournament! Bring your DS and your copy of Diamond or Pearl to see if your Pokémon have what it takes to beat some of the most serious trainers around! All battles will be double battle with a 3-Pokémon party. Elimination rounds will be open to Pokémon of any level, but qualifiers will be held in the Union Room, which means you'd better have a good party of Pokémon level 30 or under, too! That event will also be recorded and broadcast the next day!

Finally, I just finished putting this (179mb) together for an upcoming library workshop. Yes, it's the 'I love the GTs' sneak preview rough cut again, but this time, it's got Italian subtitles. Enjoy.

Round 3 Results: Roysterless Us still Unstoppable

by eli

Last month, Clan Us proved that they weren't a one-trick pony. This month, they proved that the pony can still do multiple tricks repeatedly even if you cut off 2 of its strongest legs. That's one strong pony. Even without the presence of the mighty Royster brothers and even missing their solid third-stringer [gtplayer:504], Us was still able to dominate the afternoon with only smash masters #1 [gtplayer:788] (also known as lain) and #2 [gtplayer:483], plus the increasingly impressive double threat [gtplayer:382], who is now ranked 3rd over all, as Us hangs onto the top 4 spots on the leaderboard even with the amazing #4 [gtplayer:614] having missed an entire event. Us stayed pegged atop the clan standings all day and narrowly missed a victory sweep, even triumphing once again in the clan battle surprise game, Pixeljunk Racers. Read on for full event details.
