1960s
In the 1950s the Library expanded its outreach efforts with the introduction of the Bookmobile, to which the community responded with great enthusiasm. According to Friends of the Library historian Marjorie Reade, “the eagerness for this service in outlying areas and its intensive use pointed out the need for branch libraries.”* Homer Chance, then the Library’s director, took action, and in 1965 the Library opened its first branch, named for Nellie Loving. The Friends, ever supportive, provided carpeting and fixtures for the new location.
