Michigan's 40th governor and one of the few public officials to have served in all three branches of state government. Posed here as a justice on the State Supreme Court (1972). Devoted to public service Swainson's commanding presence, humanity and love of Michigan made him a powerful advocate for the state. His last role in public service was as president of the Michigan Historical Commission, a post he held at his death in 1994.
