The top business story in the 20th century is the nurturing and evolution of the automobile and the automobile dealer. Herb Estes (pictured) was the Ford dealer in Ann Arbor for a generation. The full-service dealership was located where the Campus Inn is situated, Huron and State Streets. I believe Herb was one of the first dealers to also sell foreign made cars. Besides his wife Stelle and family and his dealership, Herb was most proud to be a graduate of Alma College, class of 1934. He served on their governing board and provided the school more favorable P.R. than any other alumnus. He joined the Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor in 1951. Oh, yes, did we mention he was a fashion statement? Herb always talked with his hand pointed, bent at the elbow. You were left wiser if you listened.
