The News On a cold day in October in 1929, Samantha had just gotten home from school, the ?rst thing she saw her father sitting on couch with his face “What’s wrong daddy?” Asked Samantha “I don’t know how to tell you this I...I...I lost my job!” Samantha’s dad had been a 7th grade English teacher. Right then Samantha’s mom came bursting through the door. (Sally is Samantha’s step mom, her real mom died 5 years ago in a car accident.) Just then Sally pushed Samantha off the couch; she just wanted to sit next to Henry (Samantha’s dad). Sally absolutely hated Samantha. The rest of the day Samantha did homework in her room. When she went downstairs to get a snack she saw her dad painting a sign, it said: “Schools Need, and that’s all she could read before her dad picked the sign up and started walking outside to go talk to some fellow teachers. After she got her snack she went back upstairs. A couple minutes later she heard people chanting something, but she couldn’t understand what they were chanting, so she went to look. She ran to her front window and was amazed to ?nd a big line of people walking down her street holding signs. The one thing that surprised her most was that she saw her dad walking in that line of people. All of a sudden Samantha hears the phone ring, she goes to pick it up, it’s her best friend Natalie. “Hey what’s up?” Samantha asked “I heard about your dad, I’m really sorry.” Natalie said “My dad said he got ?red because this thing called the stock market like dropped or something, so it’s not because he wasn’t a good teacher.” Then all of a sudden the phone rings again. Her mom picks it this time, “Hello? This is, okay....okay....oh thank you so much.” Said Sally. She had the biggest smile on her face I had ever seen her have. “That was the principal at your fathers school....he got his job back.” Samantha was amazed; she could not believe that her dad had gotten his job back. They each started jumping up and down. Samantha immediately ran outside to go get her dad. He was just close enough that he could hear. Before he came over he turned around and said something to his fellow teachers, handed his sign over to one of them then “You got your job back!” Samantha said. He was so happy he couldn’t even talk. Then Sally came over and gave Henry a huge hug. “So you heard?” Asked Sally They both walked inside and didn’t stop talking for a long time. One thing I learned is he got rehired because too many parents were complaining that there were not enough teachers for all the kids that go to school there. So he was one of the teachers picked to bring back. Two days past and my dad has been happier then he has ever been. “What exactly did the letter say that the principal gave you?” Asked Sally. He went to go get the letter out of his briefcase. Then he handed her the paper, You are very loved here, but because of the stock market our school is not getting much money, so we have to let some teacher go and you are one of them. I’m very sorry. Sincerely, Katherine Gold “Wow that’s a weird letter.” Said Samantha. The whole time she was looking over Sally’s shoulder. “Excuse me?” Asked Sally “Sorry” Said Samantha A couple days later Sally almost lost her. She was ?ghting with her boss about ?ring her assistant. Thank Goodness she didn’t get ?red. That would have been terrible if Sally lost her job. The End
