The Youth Department is hosting a teen program called Mission: Prom on April 14 from 2-4 PM at the Malletts Creek branch. The program will include a dress exchange, as well as make-up tips and DIY shoe embellishments.

We don't want to exclude anyone doesn’t have a dress to exchange or shoes to embellish, so we are looking for dresses in various sizes, as well as formal shoes. Don't worry about the dresses being outdated. Some very imaginative teens will be able to create something great and prom-worthy from our old dresses. Please help us clothe these teens for Prom! Have you ever thought of writing stories from your life or compiling an autobiography? The next meeting of the Washtenaw County Genealogical Society will feature Stephanie Kadel Taras, a professional personal biographer, speaking on "One Story at a Time" in a hands-on workshop designed to inspire individuals to craft their own life stories. The program, which is open to all, will take place at the Education Center Auditorium, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Campus, 5303 Elliott Drive, Ypsilanti on Sunday, March 25, 2007. For more information on the speaker check out her web site. For additional help check out some of the library's books on writing your life story and leave a legacy for your family and descendants.

Hear Julie Orringer read from her short story collection, How to Breathe Underwater, a New York Times Notable Book and the winner of the Northern California Book Award. Julie is the Helen Herzog Zell Visiting Professor at the University of Michigan.

Visit Crazy Wisdom Bookstore on Tuesday, March 20 to join in a drum circle led by Lori Fithian, a local drummer and drum teacher. A brief drum lesson starts at 6:45 PM, with drumming from 7-9 PM. Instruments are provided or bring your own. Kids and adults are welcome. Free.

Hang out at the library and work on your MySpace page. Find out how to get those cool backgrounds or how to upload your favorite pictures. Drop in to the third floor computer room at the Downtown library between 3:30 and 5:30 PM. Program for grades 9-12. Friend the library’s MySpace page while your working on yours and stay up on the all the cool programs at the library.

Come to the Downtown library after school to pick up some books and design your own Indian Rangoli. Rangoli are painted in front of houses on the ground during the Tamil month of Maarkazhi (between December 15th and January 15th).

Now's the time to put the finishing touches on your short story entry. Deadline for entries is March 19th. Area teens (Grades 6-12) are submitting entries to a short story contest with generous prizes (1st Place $250, 2nd Place $150, 3rd Place $100) The Awards Program is held at the Ann Arbor Book Festival, May 19, featuring teen book author, Ron Koertge.

Our first annual Pet & Wildlife Photo Contest was a huge success! Over 40 entries were received and winners were chosen in 4 categories: Grades K-2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8 and Grades 9-12. Visit the Downtown Youth Department anytime during the month of March to see ALL of the entries. This evening, March 12, was the award ceremony and every winner in each category was in attendance. First place got a $25 gift certificate to Borders and Honorable Mention got a a $10 gift certificate for Borders. Without further ado the winners are…

Invention

If you have an invention you are trying to market you might consider connecting with the New Enterprise Forum to network with other inventors, investors and entrepreneurs. The Forum will be hosting an event on Thursday, March 15 at 5:45 at the Holiday Inn North Campus (3600 Plymouth Rd.)The featured speakers, Hugo Braun, of North Coast Technology Investors, and Rajesh Kothari of Seneca Partners, will discuss "Perspectives on the Investor/Entrepreneur Relationship." The program is free to members and $20.00 for non-members. The organization's mission is "to link entrepreneurs with management expertise, joint venture partners, business services, capital and other critical resources."
