Playgroups

Thursday September 4, 2014: 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm -- Malletts Creek Branch: Program Room

This is a time for babies up to 24 months and their grown-ups to gather and play. The Library will provide the space and a variety of toys.

Each playgroup includes 15 minutes of stories, rhymes and songs. Parents/guardians must remain with their children.

No older siblings, please.

Take a Hike @ Mary Beth Doyle Nature Area

This event is intended for all ages.

Celebrate National Wilderness Month with a hike along Malletts Creek, through the woods and wetlands of this 81.4-acre park. A staff naturalist from Natural Area Preservation (City of Ann Arbor) will lead the hike.

Meet at the park entrance parking lot off Packard Road, across from Easy Street and just southeast of Cobblestone Farm, or park at the Malletts Creek Branch (3090 E. Eisenhower) and walk a half mile east along Eisenhower and Packard to the park entrance.

Emerging Writers Workshop: The Art of Writing What You Know

This event is intended for grades 6 - adult.

Do you have deep knowledge of and passion for a particular subject? How can you turn that into a nonfiction book that publishers will want? Authors Margaret Yang and Lara Zielin discuss how to turn your expertise into a nonfiction book, with special contributions from a bestselling (and local) nonfiction author.

English as a Second Language Conversation Group

Washtenaw Literacy's ESL groups focus on speaking and listening skills for adults in an informal, relaxed setting. TOEFL preparation is also available.

Kerrytown BookFest Reception and Exhibit Opening 2014

Friday September 5, 2014: 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm -- Downtown Library - 3rd Floor

AADL will be hosting a pre-Bookfest reception for the 12th annual Kerrytown Bookfest. The event will include elegant refreshments, music by harpist Deborah Gabrion and the grand opening of The Art Of The Book, Kerrytown BookFest’s Exhibit at AADL which showcases entries from the BookFest’s 7th annual Book Cover Design contest for high school students. The exhibit and will be on display on the 3rd Floor of the Downtown Library, through October 12.

The contest, which was open to all Michigan High School students and was sponsored in part by the Michigan Humanities Council, asked the students to re-imagine a cover for a chosen book and give a visual interpretation of the written word. This year’s book was Paddle-to-the-Sea, a Caldecott medal winning book by Holling C. Holling.

John Hilton, editor of the Ann Arbor Observer will make remarks about the 12th annual Kerrytown BookFest, and Robin Agnew, Kerrytown BookFest President and owner of Aunt Agatha’s bookstore will give an overview of the exhibit and the book design contest.

Sign Language for Infants and Toddlers

Saturday September 6, 2014: 11:00 am to 11:45 am -- Malletts Creek Branch: Program Room

This event is intended for hearing infants and toddlers, 6 months - 2 years, with an adult.

Learn to sprinkle family-friendly American Sign Language (ASL) into songs and play, making signing easy, fun, and successful!

Kathy Brady, Certified Instructor of Signing Smart, will be presenting. No older siblings, please.
