Local Cartoonist Jerzy Drozd Discusses Why Superhero Characters Communicate To Us
Saturday April 25, 2009: 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm -- Downtown Library: Multi-Purpose Room
Superheroes have been an integral part of American culture since the late 1930s. Almost everyone knows what effect Kryptonite has on Superman, why Batman has a disdain for guns, or how Spider-Man learned "with great power comes great responsibility." But are these cultural icons merely power fantasies for young people, or do they speak to wider human experiences and struggles? Join cartoonist and teaching artist Jerzy Drozd for an interactive discussion about the role of superheroes in fiction as well as the parallels that can be found when one compares them to characters found in mythology and fables.
Jerzy Drozd began his cartooning career at 19, self-publishing his own comic books. He is the contributing editor of Sugary Serials (www.sugaryserials.com), a comics anthology that specializes in all-ages comics serialized online and collected in print.
