Film & Discussion: "La Escuela"

Monday November 10, 2008: 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm -- Downtown Library: 4th Floor Meeting Room

This award-winning 2002 documentary by Hannah Weyer follows the life of vivacious Liliana Luis. Her debut as an all-American high school freshman is immeasurably complicated by the fact that her Mexican-American family makes its living following the harvests from Texas to California. The Luis family has come to realize that they must give Liliana the chance to complete high school and seek a life beyond the fields. But giving her the opportunity to stay in school is not as easy as it might seem.

A discussion will be facilitated by Deborah Hollands Des Jardin from the UM English Language Institute and Mabel Rodriguez of the UM Residential College. "La Escuela" is part of the P.O.V. series on Public Television. The film is not rated. This event is cosponsored by Michigan Television and is held in conjunction with AADL's current exhibit, The Migrant Project: Contemporary California Farm Workers – Photographs and Text By Rick Nahmias.
