Ragtime Music Expert Michael Montgomery Discusses Dixieland Jazz In Ann Arbor: The Story Of The Boll Weevil Jass Band

Sunday April 19, 2009: 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm -- Malletts Creek Branch: Program Room AB

Travel back in time to the late 1950’s when a new jazz band - the Boll Weevil Jass Band – was formed in Ann Arbor. The Weevils (BWJB) were made up of undergrad and grad students, UM faculty members and local jazz musicians. They played gigs at fraternity and sorority houses and staged several public concerts. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about Ann Arbor’s own slant on ragtime music, through the story of this fascinating band. Ragtime music expert (and pianist and co-founder of the Weevils) Mike Montgomery will discuss Dixieland Jazz in Ann Arbor and play excerpts from Weevil recordings to illustrate the various musical conventions used (e.g., breaks, stop-time, after beats, double-time, changing keys).
