Cinema Night Special: An Evening Of Fresh Takes On Animated Films And Live Music

Friday May 3, 2013: 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm -- Downtown Library: Multi-Purpose Room

Looking to discover something unusual in the world of film? With a theme of "fresh takes on animation," this session of Cinema Night Special brings together an 80-minute animated feature, an Oscar-winning short and live music in-between!

o In the delightful opening short "The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore," award-winning author/illustrator William Joyce and co-director Brandon Oldenburg combine a variety of techniques (miniatures, computer animation, 2D animation) to present a hybrid style of animation that harkens back to silent films and M-G-M Technicolor musicals. The 2011 film, based on the book by the same title, received over a dozen awards, including the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. It is a story of people who devote their lives to books and books who return the favor and is a poignant, humorous allegory about the curative powers of story.

o Tonight's 80-minute feature is 2011's critically-acclaimed Czech film "Alois Nebel," which won, among other awards, Best Animated Film at the 2012 European Film Awards. The film will be shown with subtitles. Inspired by classic film noir and rendered in mesmerizing black-and-white rotoscope, this dark-hearted film traces the haunted memories and mysterious visions of a troubled Czechoslovakian train dispatcher, haunted by events he was a part of during the Second World War.

Between films, local band Cash Harrison & The Terrible Decisions will perform a live set, and fresh popcorn will be served. Enjoy this special evening of film and music!
