UMS Book Discussion For Teachers:"India Calling: An Intimate Portrait Of A Nation's Remaking" By Anand Giridharadas

Tuesday March 12, 2013: 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm -- Downtown Library: Multi-Purpose Room

Writer Anand Giridharadas believes the enchantment of the American Dream has competition from an increasingly potent charm: the call of India.

In India, crossing class and caste boundaries is becoming more common--due in part to globalization and the Internet--and whereas generations of Indians saw emigration to America as an opportunity to get ahead, a new generation is forging its way towards prosperity in its homeland. Giridharadas depicts this dynamic shift in his new book, "India Calling: An Intimate Portrait Of A Nation's Remaking."

This book club stimulates a conversation about the connections between India today and India-themed UMS programming this season. UMS "Reading Culture" Book Clubs for educators expand and build upon ideas within the UMS season of events using relevant works of literature. In these facilitated sessions, participants explore and express opinions about stimulating books and learn strategies for leading classroom book discussions.

The first 30 registrants receive a free copy of the book. Registration is required. To register for this teacher workshop, call the University Musical Society at 734-615-0122 or e-mail umsyouth@umich.edu.
