The members gather informally and socialize primarily online by posting their works and sharing their experiences, tips and skills on photography on the Club's Facebook group page.
So I Come to America: Detroit Pre-WWI Immigrants - Photographs by Robert Gordon
Now through October 14, 2010 -- Downtown Library: Multi-Purpose Room Exhibit
"So I Come to America" tells the story of pre-World War I immigrants through documentary photographs and text panels. Between 1980 and 1983, Robert Gordon interviewed and photographed 50 Detroit area immigrants who came to the US prior to the outbreak of WWI in 1914.
Shot in crisp black-and-white, the images are of people who left their homes in other countries for a brand-new life in America in the early part of the 20th century. Gordon can sum up in one word why these people left behind everything they knew to start over in a new world: "Opportunity." Gordon is the library director at Siena Heights University.
The Blooms of Matthaei: An Exhibit of Contemporary Quilting by Brooks Hinerman
Now through October 14, 2010 -- Downtown Library: 3rd Floor Exhibit
Born and raised in Ann Arbor, Brooks Hinerman developed her appreciation of the beauty of the natural world as a child, spending time every year in the Northern Canadian wilderness. She is now a nature photographer and quilt artist.
Brooks began quilting in 2005, using very traditional quilt blocks. She soon melded her love of photography with quilting, using her macro photography of flowers as patterns for making art quilts. She uses applique and a type of thread painting to create the floral images in fabric. Over the years, many of Brooks' finest macro images were taken at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor. The idea of an exhibit grew as the photos that spoke to her for patterns were taken at Matthaei, in their conservatory and outside gardens. This beautiful exhibit is the result.
