Curriculum of Color: Rudolf Steiner School of Ann Arbor 2010 Annual Student Art Exhibit
Now through February 25, 2010 -- Downtown Library: Multi-Purpose Room Exhibit and 3rd Floor Exhibit
In Waldorf education, the arts are an essential component of the curriculum, providing avenues for recognition and understanding of the world in which we live. This exhibit will feature oil and watercolor paintings, drawings and mosaics, of the students in Kindergarten through Grade 12 at the Rudolf Steiner School of Ann Arbor.
Of special interest is the student work featured in the lower level display cases. The work includes woodwork, handwork and sculpture, plus beautiful main lesson books which span a curriculum that is unparalleled in diversity and richness.
Seasonal Dreams: An Exhibit by Betsy Beckerman
Now through March 14, 2010 -- Malletts Creek Branch: Exhibits
Betsy Beckerman is a musician and an artist. The luminosity and transparency of her watercolors and element of surprise in her collage convey the joy and freedom she feels while creating art. Drawn to vivid colors, light, and movement, Betsy listens to music as she works on her art and allows the music to influence her work.
Betsy is a member of the Faculty Women's Club Painting Group and the community group, Saturday for Art. Members of both groups continue to coach and inspire her. She is also a musician, often playing guitar, concertina or dulcimer at Ann Arbor District Library Storytimes and at the University of Michigan Health System as a Bedside Musician.

Each playgroup includes 15 minutes of stories, rhymes and songs. Parents/guardians must remain with their children.

Who Is Franz Schubert?

UM Professor of Musicology Jason Geary will discuss Schubert's young life as a composer and prodigy, and connect Schubert's improbable story with the birth of a new musical style and vocabulary that would resonate throughout the 19th and even 20th centuries. This is a second in a series of 'Who Is?' events to be held at the Library, examining great musicians. The series is cosponsored by the University Musical Society. This event is presented in conjunction with February 14 UMS performance of the Schubert Piano Trios at Rackham Auditorium.

Writing To Get In: A Presentation For High School Students And Their Parents On The College Application Personal Essay

Thinking about the college application essay?? Join us for program on giving high school students the tools to write a personal essay for their college applications that truly tells colleges who they are. UM Professor of American Culture, Julie Ellison, and a team of trained college students from U-M will lead this session, which will include ample time for audience questions. Numerous handouts and other resources will also be available. These tools are drawn from previous writing workshops with visual artists, creative writers, and high school and college students.
Attendees will also have an opportunity to be the first to register for a series of four special one-on-one sessions which will occur at the Library on Tuesdays, March 9, 16, 23 & 30 from 4:00 to 5:30 pm (online registration for these one-on-one sessions will begin on Thursday, February 11 at aadl.org). These sessions will offer personalized assistance with the college essay.

Approaching Mid-Life With A Positive Attitude With Judy Norsigian, Executive Director, Our Bodies Ourselves and Dr. Helen Kales, Director, UM Program for Positive Aging

It is the 15th anniversary of the University of Michigan Women's Health Resource Center, and the Center and AADL are collaborating for this special event. Judy Norsigian, Executive Director, Our Bodies, Ourselves will discuss - Menopause: Revisiting the Hormone Debate. Judy Norsigian is a co-founder of Our Bodies Ourselves (OBOS), also known as the Boston Women's Health Book Collective (BWHBC), and co-author of all editions of Our Bodies, Ourselves. She is an internationally renowned speaker and writer on a wide range of women's health concerns. Copies of Our Bodies, Ourselves will be on sale and the event will include a booksigning.
She will be followed by Dr. Helen Kales, Assistant Professor University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry and Director, Program for Positive Aging, who will cover - Promoting Emotional and Cognitive Wellbeing in Later Life. Dr. Kales has established a multi-disciplinary research program investigating depression in later life. She investigates a vitally important but neglected clinical problem--the co-occurrence of depression and dementia in later-life.
Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Reads Book Discussion: The Living Great Lakes
