Ann Arbor Women Artists 2010 Spring Exhibit

Now through April 14, 2010 -- Downtown Library: Multi-Purpose Room Exhibit and 3rd Floor Exhibit

Ann Arbor Women Artists, founded in 1951, is a non-profit organization of approximately 230 artists, beginning to professional, of both genders. The purpose of the AAWA is to stimulate creative expression and sharing among its members. Each calendar year the AAWA holds two or three juried shows. A juror is invited to select from a large group of submissions a final show that is a reflection of the body of work produced by the membership.

The juror for the AAWA 2010 Spring Exhibition is Brooks Harris Stevens. Brooks is a fiber artist and an art professor at Eastern Michigan University. She received her BFA from the Svannah College of Art and Design, and her MFA from East Carolina University.

Film & Discussion: Prom Night in Mississippi

Thursday March 18, 2010: 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm -- Downtown Library: Multi-Purpose Room

One town. Two proms. Until now. Morgan Freeman, the Academy Award-winning actor, offered to pay for the senior prom at Charleston High School in Mississippi with the condition that the prom be racially integrated. After the second request, the school board accepted his offer and history was made. Charleston High School had its first-ever integrated prom, in 2008. The film follows students, teachers, and parents in the lead-up to the big day. The film's director, Paul Saltzman, will lead the post-film discussion. This event is co-sponsored by the University of Michigan Community Scholars Program

The Ann Arbor Film Festival, the longest running independent film festival in the U.S., will hold its 48th festival on March 23 - 28. At this pre-Festival event, Saginaw Valley State University Associate Professor Mike Mosher will examine the work of two southeastern Michigan filmmakers who were teenagers in the early 1970s and eager viewers of the Ann Arbor Film Festivals.

Film: Journey Into America

An award-winning Muslim professor sets out to discover America with a team of young Americans in the acclaimed documentary 'Journey Into America' (not rated). Ambassador Akbar Ahmed, Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies at American University in Washington, D.C., is considered the world's leading authority on contemporary Islam. He set off with his enthusiastic young team, visiting over 70 cities and more than 100 mosques on an unprecedented project interviewing countless Americans in their homes, schools, and places of worship. They explore America and American identity in a post-September 11 world during their journey, which takes them to cities big and small. This event is co-sponsored by the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies at the University of Michigan

An Afternoon Of Jazz With the Bob Sweet Trio

This is piano jazz at its finest. Bob Sweet (drums), Kurt Kranke (bass) and Tad Weed (piano) have been part of the southeast Michigan jazz scene for decades. Anything might happen when they get together, but the sound is always fueled by creative group interplay. Whether they're playing jazz standards, original pieces, or unexpected takes on pop tunes, you can count on a fresh, dynamic sound, distinctively flavored with the soul of the Detroit jazz tradition.

Playgroups

This is a time for babies up to 24 months and their grown-ups to gather and play. The Library will provide the space and a variety of toys.

Each playgroup includes 15 minutes of stories, rhymes and songs. Parents/guardians must remain with their children.

Who Is Anton Chekhov?

Monday March 22, 2010: 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm -- Downtown Library: Multi-Purpose Room

Join Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Michael Makin and Residential College Drama Lecturer Katherine Mendeloff as they examine Chekhov's role in Russian literature and society and as transformer and innovator of Russian drama. U-M acting students will also perform several scenes from Uncle Vanya featuring costume, live music and other scenic elements, setting the stage for a lively discussion of Chekhov's classic play and the challenges set forth for actors and directors in mounting this production.

This event is presented in conjunction with the University Musical Society production of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya by the Maly Drama Theater of St. Petersburg at the Power Center March 25-28. The event is also held in collaboration with the U-M Center for Russian and East European Studies, and the U-M Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures.

Bright Nights Community Forum: Depression After 60: Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment discussed by Sara Wright, PhD, Dept. of Psychiatry, U-M School of Medicine and Depression Center

Later-life depression is defined as depression that occurs after the age of 60. While prevalent, it is not necessarily part of the aging process. To provide greater understanding of depression in older adults, Sara Wright, Ph.D., Clinical Lecturer in the University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry, and member of the U-M Depression Center, will present a brief overview of the latest research on later-life depression, including strategies for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. This will be followed by questions from the audience and a discussion with expert panelists including Stephen Aronson, MD, Medical Director, Inpatient Psychiatry, St Joseph Mercy Hospital; and Mariko Foulk, MSW, LMSW, Clinical Social Worker, Turner Geriatric Clinic, University of Michigan.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Across the Lifespan

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, OCD, is an anxiety disorder and is characterized by recurrent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and/or repetitive behaviors (compulsions). This event will cover current trends and treatments in OCD, and what is being discovered through research. There will be ample time for audience questions. Speakers include Jim Abelson, MD, PhD, Professor, UM Dept. of Psychiatry, Director, UM Dept. of Psychiatry Anxiety Disorders Program, and Co-Director of the Trauma, Stress and Anxiety Research Group, UM; Gregory Lynn Hanna, MD, Assoc.
