Film & Discussion: Prom Night in Mississippi
Thursday March 18, 2010: 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm -- Downtown Library: Multi-Purpose Room
One town. Two proms. Until now. Morgan Freeman, the Academy Award-winning actor, offered to pay for the senior prom at Charleston High School in Mississippi with the condition that the prom be racially integrated. After the second request, the school board accepted his offer and history was made. Charleston High School had its first-ever integrated prom, in 2008. The film follows students, teachers, and parents in the lead-up to the big day. The film's director, Paul Saltzman, will lead the post-film discussion. This event is co-sponsored by the University of Michigan Community Scholars Program
