A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words: Paintings By U-M Faculty Women's Club

Now through June 13, 2013 -- Malletts Creek Branch: Exhibits

This exhibit features the collected works of the Painting Section of the University of Michigan's Faculty Women's Club (FWC). The exhibit covers a large variety of styles and media. The members of FWC strive to enrich the cultural life of the Ann Arbor area by raising awareness of, and by encouraging active participation in, the visual arts.

The FWC is a cross-campus organization, offering members acquaintance and fellowship. Members have been "painting" together since 1929, creating award-winning pieces in a wide variety of media, and learning from one another at weekly gatherings in their homes. Sharing experiences with new media, critiquing one another's work, and encouraging exploration in artistic expression are the basic elements of their continuing study of the visual arts as a group. Shows of their works have been displayed for the past 44 years at venues in the greater Ann Arbor area, including art fairs, art galleries, banks, churches, and libraries.

Film: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Historical Perspective

Wednesday May 22, 2013: 7:00 pm to 8:15 pm -- Downtown Library: Multi-Purpose Room

AADL joins with The Performance Network Theatre for a special screening of the acclaimed documentary "Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Historical Perspective." The film examines the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.- the subject for the Performance Network's May production of Katori Hall's new play "The Mountaintop."

In this award-winning documentary, writer/director Thomas Friedman takes a look Reverend King's ideas, actions, and influence on the fight to end racial segregation. A staunch advocate of peaceful resistance to injustice and racial violence, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood at the vortex of the U.S. civil rights movement of the 1960s. He became a national leader, and his death at the hands of an assassin in 1968 was grieved by both blacks and whites. Narrated by Arthur Berghardt, the 1993 film (which is not rated) includes rare archival footage, photographs, and interviews with King associates.

Performance Network staff will be on hand to provide an introduction to "The Mountaintop," which is having its Michigan Premiere at the Network through June 2. The critically-acclaimed play takes place on April 3, 1968, at Memphis' Lorraine Motel the night before King would be assassinated. For information or tickets to The Mountaintop, visit the Performance Network website at performancenetwork.org.

While the play takes place on one night the evening just before his death - this film night at the Library is an excellent way to find out more about the man and his life.
