There's Still Time. . .March 19th Entry Deadline for Short Story Contest

Go ahead and put those finishing touches on your Short Story. The LAST day to turn in your story is March 19th/Friday by 9pm at any of the AADL locations, or, if you're emailing us your entry, you have until midnight! You can email your stories to allwrite@aadl.org

Guidelines are here. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded in three categories: Grades 6-8, Grades 9-10, Grades 11-12. "It's All Write!" features $1500 in prizes to be distributed among nine lucky winners. You can read the winning stories from last year. Click here.

We're lining up an amazing slate of judges, who are all published authors. Among the panel this year, Kathi Applet, who received a Newbery Honor Award last year, David Lubar, with witty books like Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie and My Rotten Life to his credit, and teen guru, Patrick Jones, author of Tear Collector

3rd Annual Manga Drawing Contest Winners Announced!

The judging is done and the winners have been announced! Judging was conducted by Jerzy Drozd and Shannon "Roku-Chan" Townsend. With over 80 entries in four age categories the judges had a tough time this year! The top three finishers in each category received gift certificates to Wizzywig and medals. All of the artwork will be on display through August in the Downtown Youth Department and can also be found online in our image gallery!

Teen Graffiti Art Contest Entries Now on Display

All of the entries in the 7th Annual Teen Graffiti Art Contest are now on display at the Downtown Library Multi-Purpose Room and Third Floor Exhibit Area through August 30. You can also check out all of the entries in our online gallery from both this year and last year's contests.

During the 2009 Art Fair, teens from across the area gathered in the Downtown Library’s parking lot to try their hand at the art of Graffiti. Each artist was given a 4' x 4' canvas and a variety of colors of spray paint. Come see the end result, on display through the end of the summer.

It's Lego and Manga Contest Time Again! Contest Guidelines Released!

If it's summer it must be time for our annual Lego and Manga Contests! Use the summer to focus your creativity and maybe you will win! In order to enter either contest participants must read and follow the rules and guidelines. Children and teens aged preschool to 12th grade are invited to enter the 4th Annual Lego Contest. This year the Lego contest award ceremony will take place at Weber's Inn (3050 Jackson Ave) on Monday, August 10 @ 8:00 PM. For complete submission guidelines and the talent release form click here. Top finishers will receive gift certificates to Toys R Us, and we'll have medals for winners of the special categories!

2009 Judges for the Teen's Short Story Writing Contest!

Steven Lee Climer is a professor of English at Baker College of Allen Park, MI. He has sold the motion picture rights of his novel ‘Demonesque’ to After Dark Productions, and is the recipient of several honors including the Darrell Award, Eppie for Best Horror Novel 2000, and 1997 finalist for Best First Novel from the International Horror Guild. Steve has published eight adult horror/fantasy novels, three works for children/Young Adults, a short story collection of horror stories, and over 20 short stories in various magazines.

John Coy writes picture books, middle-grade novels, and YA novels. His latest is , the first book in a series about four fifth-grade friends. He lives in Minnesota.

Ronald Cree studied television production at the University of Colorado and currently resides in Colorado Springs with his adopted son, Gabriel. S. A. Harazin lives in Georgia and worked as a nurse in a hospital for many years. Blood Brothers, 2007 is her first novel.

Michael Harmon enjoys backpacking, fishing, woodworking, and building skateboard and snowboarding ramps with his kids. Skate is his first nove, followed by Last Exit to Normal, a ‘Thumbs Up’ nominee, and most recently Brutal, 2009. The author lives in Spokane, WA.

Kristin Wolden Nitz has moved 10 times since graduating from Michigan Tech with a degree in electrical engineering. Her novel, Saving the Griffin, was named as a finalist for the Kentucky Bluegrass Award and the Georgia Book Award.

Daniel A. Olivas is the author of Devil Talk: Stories, 2004, Assumption and Other Stories, 2003, The Courtship of Maria Rivera Pena, 2000. Widely anthologized, he also has written for numerous publications. Olivas is the editor of Latinos in Lotusland: An Anthology of Contemporary Southern California Literature, 2008, which brings together sixty years of Los Angeles fiction by Latino/a writers. www.danielolivas.com

Cynthia Leitich Smith is the YA author of Tantalize, 2007, and its companions, Eternal, 2009, and Blessed, forthcoming, all Gothic fantasies from Candlewick Press. Author Gary D. Schmidt Discusses His Teen Novels And Announces The Winners Of The 2009 Teen Short Story Contest

Schmidt discusses the craft of writing and announces the 2009 winners of the "It's All Write" teen short story writing contest. This year, over 200 area students participated, making it one of the most competitive ever! This event, sponsored by the Ann Arbor District Library, is a highlight of the Ann Arbor Book Festival.

Enter our 1st Annual Oscar Contest! Plus attend our Oscar Night event on Feb. 19!

You're invited to enter our 1st Annual Oscar prediction contest! Teens in grades 6 and up and adults are invited to enter. For each category choose one projected winner - be sure to answer the tie-breakers too! Winners will be selected during the week after the Oscar telecast (February 22, 2009) and will be chosen based on accuracy of answers - using the tie-breakers if necessary. You may only enter the contest one time.

Three winners will be chosen and will receive Gift Certificates for Quality 16 Movie Theaters:
1st place = $25; 2nd place = $20 and 3rd place = $15.

2009 It's All Write! Short Story Writing Contest

It's almost time for the 2009 It's All Write! Short Story Contest to begin! In less than one month, on FRIDAY, JANUARY 23, entries will start being accepted in our annual writing contest. Winners will be announced at the Ann Arbor Book Festival Short Story Contest event, Saturday, May 16 featuring teen book author Gary D Schmidt. Here are the facts for this year's contest:

1st Place ($250), 2nd Place ($150), and 3rd Place ($100) prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Grades 6-8, Grades 9-10, and Grades 11-12.

Entries accepted FRIDAY, JANUARY 23 through FRIDAY, MARCH 20.

LEGO & Graffiti Contest Entries are now online

Take a look at some of the best talent Ann Arbor has to offer! All of the entries to the AADL's 2008 LEGO Contest and the 2008 Graffiti Art Contest are now online as a part of our online photo gallery, pictureAnnArbor. The Graffiti Art Contest gallery features over 40 creations by local teen artists made right here in the AADL's backyard. And the LEGO Contest gallery features every one of the 130 entries that came in this year. Come check out your own work, your friends' work, or just get some inspiration for your own artistic creations.

Don't forget that the 2008 Graffiti Art Contest entries are also on display in the Downtown Library until August 28.
