Close Encounters of both Adorable and Frightening Kinds

by Sancho Panza

Wednesday brings possibly the cutest event of the year to the Library—the Preschool Halloween Party and Parade. Hundreds of tiny people in puffy, sparkly and often enormous costumes snake their way through the Downtown Library, collecting treats at the public service desks.

Halloween is, alas, your one opportunity to see a ghost at AADL. George Eberhart at I Love Libraries, however, has compiled a comprehensive list of places to find specters, spirits and other like-minded visitors at libraries throughout the country, including the Starkweather Home in Ypsilanti, which housed a library from 1890 until 1964. Mary Ann Starkweather, one of the home’s original owners, is rumored to occupy the second floor. Former staff apparently reported hearing her footsteps creaking above them in the empty building after hours...

Otaku Afternoon - Wizzywig, Cosplay, DDR, Go and Anime...

by erin

How better to spend a Sunday afternoon than 5 hours in the basement of the Downtown Library!? We start @ 12 when the library opens with DDR, Wizzywig will be there to sell there wares, and help judge the Cosplay contest (btw no one showed to the contest this summer - which left many $$s in Wizzywig gift certificates unclaimed - don't let this tragedy happen again!) and gab. Then from 2:00-3:00 or so members from the A2 Go Club (including our own Joy) will be on hand to teach and play this ancient, strategic, fun board game. After that we'll be screening anime until 5:00. Food and drinks of course and hopefully you and many friends will be on hand.

Want to have fun on Halloween and help a local non-profit organization at the same time? The concert, held at 7:30pm, will feature MacPodz, Ragbirds, My Dear Disco, Jamie Register & the Glendales and many more.

The Women’s Center of Southeastern Michigan is one of the many non-profits that helps women and families in our area. Instead of giving out treats on Halloween, give to others and have a great time in the process.

by Debbie G.

Learn how to compile a keepsake cookbook when culinary historian Pat Cornett explains the basics of how to produce a keepsake family cookbook, including researching family stories and recipes on Wednesday November 7, 2007: 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm in the Downtown Library Multi-Purpose Room. Pat says the best cookbooks include recollections about when the food was served, what it was like in the kitchen with Grandma, and family photos. So bring your memories and your notepads and get started saving and sharing your family's recipes.
