Here is your chance to meet Amy R. Singer - blogger, knitter, author and an all-around personality on Sunday, March 9th at the Downtown Library Multipurpose Room, 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. (The door opens at noon, hint! hint! and don't say we didn't warn you). And I am assuming you know about all those fabulous FREE patterns on her online magazine.
Amy will be talking, knitting and signing books. We may even have a preview of her next book with co-author, our Jillian Moreno. Amy's program is co-sponsored by Busy Hands.

Find out what it's like to run for President . . . of the Czech Republic!

We nearly had yet another president in our midst right here in Ann Arbor. Unlike Michigan native son Gerald Ford, however, Jan Svejnar was running for president of the Czech Republic. Svejnar is an economist and professor at UM's Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. He was narrowly defeated in his bid for the Czech presidency. Svejnar will be chatting about his experiences in an upcoming event at the Ford School.

They're not really small potatoes

The duo of acclaimed Chicago-based husband-and-wife duo of Jacquie Manning and Rich Prezioso who call themselves Small Potatoes will be performing as part of the Greenwood Coffee House Series this Friday night, February 29 at the First Methodist Church at 1001 Green Rd. at 8 p.m. Small Potatoes call themselves "electo-maniacs," i.e. not pigeon-holing themselves into one genre of folk music but embracing many. Singing cowboy songs as well as country, blues, swing and some originals, they love what they do and have gained a loyal following both in Chicago, their hometown and at festivals and clubs nationwide. They've been opening acts for Susan Werber, Bill Staines, Tom Paxton and many others. Mike Regenstreif of Sing Out Magazine says: “Small Potatoes might well be one of the leading mainstays of the folk scene for many years to come.”

You can help raise awareness and funds by participating in their annual Bowl For Kids’ Sake bowling event on Saturday March 15th at Colonial Lanes. Teams have been forming so sign up now! Come dressed as your favorite TV or movie character…or take your cue from literary characters who have made it to the Big Screen...and join the fun with trivia games, prizes, food and bowling! If bowling isn’t your bag, you can donate anyway or consider becoming a Big Bro or Sis.

Poetry out loud

If you didn't already know, there's a great monthly poetry reading at Sweetwater's Cafe on west Washington St. called "Writers Reading at Sweetwaters". On the third Tuesday of each month, there's a featured reader and then an open mike period when anyone who has ever wanted to read their work can do so. Past readers have included Ed Morin, Rick Solomon and Alison Swan. On Tuesday, February 19, Kristin Stelter and Michael Moriarty will be the featured readers. Chris Lord and Esther Hurwitz, esteemed co-creators of these soirees, promise a piece of cookie to each brave soul who ventures forth. It's a casual, friendly evening even if you only want to listen and have a cup of Joe.
