Calling All Knitters With Knit A Round

Knitters of all levels are welcome to an afternoon with the experts from Knit A Round Yarn Shop. We'll have new patterns and projects to choose from. Yarn will be supplied. Bring your own needles, (standard size 8 or 10 are good), if you have them. Check out some inspiring ideas from Big Book of Socks or Hattitude, knits for every mood. Hope to see you at Traverwood this Saturday, April 17th, from 2-3:30pm, for Grades 6-Adult.

College application experts John Boshoven, Community High’s premier college prep counselor, and Deb Merion, founder of Essay Coaching will be joined by performance coach Geraldine Markel at this event for parents and teens.

At this National Library Week Director's Program on Mon., April 12 at 7 PM at the Downtown Library, three nationally-known journalists will discuss the future of their field in this era of rapid change. This panel discussion features Franklyn Cater, senior producer at NPR's All Things Considered; Wayne Drehs, three-time Emmy Award-winning sportswriter for ESPN.com and Kyle Poplin, who helped launch Bluffton Today, an interactive, hyper-local newspaper. Cosponsored by Michigan Radio.

1st Annual PEEPS® Photo Contest Winners!

It was a dirty, marshmallowy job but someone had to do it! We took over where the Ann Arbor News left off and debuted the 1st Annual PEEPS® photo contest. Participants from preschool age to adults of all ages created dioramas using PEEPS®, took photos and submitted them. Judging was conducted by myself, Lara Zielin, author of Donut Days and editor of the Literature, Science & Arts magazine at the University of Michigan, and Amy Sumerton, Program Director for 826Michigan. We laughed, we cried and we came up with the winners! Sometime soon the winners' photos and ALL of the entries will be linked here and permanently stored in our gallery, but in the meantime check them out at annarbor.com. A Conversation About HPV In Our Community

Join us Tuesday April 13 from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at the Downtown Library for a discussion about HPV with physicians Ebony C. Parker-Featherstone, M.D. and Amanda F. Dempsey, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. About of sexually active people will develop HPV at some time in their lives. University of Michigan physicians will discuss infection and vaccination rates from a local perspective and will give information on current research on prevention. Included in the discussion will be changes in the Gardasil vaccine to include availability for males and the addition of the new Cervarix vaccine for females.

This event is co-sponsored by the University of Michigan Health System Women's Health Program and the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center Community Outreach Office.

Meet Stan Sakai at AADL

Usagi Yojimbo fans, take note: Stan Sakai is coming to AADL! The creator of Usagi Yojimbo, the epic saga of a samurai rabbit living in late-sixteenth and early-seventeenth-century Japan, will be at the Downtown Library on Saturday, April 17, at noon. First published in 1984, Usagi Yojimbo continues to this day, with Stan as the lone author and nearly-sole artist. This special National Library Week event includes books for sale, courtesy of Vault of Midnight, and plenty of time for Stan to answer your questions!

Celtic folk music

Celtic music isn't only for St. Patrick's Day. This Saturday, April 3, local group, Cairn to Cairn, composed of founder and guitarist, Terry Farmer, singer-flutist, Kelly McDermott and bassist, Rob Crozier will perform at the Rudolf Steiner High School, 2230 Pontiac Trail, at 7 p.m. The classical, folk and rock backgrounds of the musicians make for a rich and vibrant sound. Terry Farmer composes some of their music. All Music Guide reviewer Steve Leggett says of Cairn to Cairn, "...they make these tunes breathe like they're actually alive."
