Patron Comment: 3-2-07 I am sitting at a table near the lamps (bright ones) on. I am minding my own business when this lady stops at the table out of nowhere, my daughter's private possessions are, a newspaper she was using, but she stepped away for a moment! This woman takes the papers and I told her kindly my daughter is using this paper. Well she says, this is the Library's paper. I told her to please put it back. She says this is the Library's property. I reach and took the other half, put it back. She went to make a report to a young librarian who came to the table with no interest at all to hear what I had to say! I reach over across the table where my daughter's possessions at the newspaper and gave it over to the cocky woman and the woman told Librarian "she needs to be put out." Then I knew she meant trouble to me! The Librarian said to me "I have to put you out." I said, she needs to leave as well! This seems to me harassment and a cocky lady seemed rascist. The Library is meant for everybody not for people who want to pickity at peaceful ones. A menace is a problem person. This comment is real and honest a lost soul can be devastating when it wanders into trouble.

Patron Comment: Single people working in tutoring rooms should be changed. Tutoring spaces are limited.

Patron Comment: Could you please install wireless internet service at the Northeast Branch even if you are going to build a new library in the area soon? Thank you.

AADL Reply: Thanks for contacting us. We are still working to add wireless access at the Northeast Branch, but it requires some construction from the Cable Company which can be unpredictable. It is still possible that the service may not be ready before the current Northeast Branch closes, but worst-case, the new Northeast branch will have wireless. Thanks for your patience, and let us know if you have any further questions or trouble. Eli Neiburger AADL Tech Manager

Patron Comment: I was wondering if it's possible to have a book acknowledged in Memory of a child who just passed away. My grandfather just died and many people made donations to his local library and a specific book was "In memory of..." If this is possible, please let me know how to proceed. This little boy was just one year old and passed away on Sunday. I would like to have a children's book/make a donation, in his memory. Please advise...Thank you!

AADL Reply: I am very sorry for your loss. We do accept donations to purchase items that are placed in the library with a bookplate in memory of individuals. You can mail a check addressed to me with a note that indicates what type of book or subject you would like selected in the little boy's memory. We will send a letter to the child's family, if you include their names and contact information in your note, letting them know that a gift was made in his memory. When the book arrives, the bookplate is added, and the item is placed in the collection for circulation. Thank you. Josie Parker Director Ann Arbor District Library 343 S. Regarding: website

Patron Comment: Apparently your RSS feed for new books http://www.aadl.org/feeds?type=newitems&mat=a&sub=!fiction&disp=20 (per Google and my feedreader's link) is broken by the presence of an accented character in an author name: > XML Parsing Error: not well-formed > Location: http://www.aadl.org/feeds?type=newitems&mat=a&sub=!fiction&disp=20 > Line Number 272, Column 38:<b>Author</b>: H#arkb, Khlid<br/>

AADL Reply: Thanks for the debug info, Bill. I found this row in the new items database and fixed the bad characters. You would not believe what the stock catalog engine considers acceptable UTF-8. =) I updated again yesterday and this item is now out of the top 20 new nonfiction, but I did find it in the feeds and verified that it's now fixed. Thanks again for passing this on and let us know if you have any other trouble. Eli

Patron Comment: Hello: I was in the AADL main branch on Saturday, and for the first time logged in with my laptop to use your wireless internet. Ever since then, regardless of where I am, my computer seems to think that it must always try to go to an AADL web site ("wireless.aad.lorg--404"; http://192.168.100.105/index.php) in order to open up Safari. If I click to go to my homepage, or type in another web address it routes to those locations just fine, it's just a little strange that it now wants to go to that IP address-looking website anytime I open Safari. Do you have any idea how to rectify this situation? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

AADL Reply: Thanks for contacting us. It sounds as if your home page or start page accidentally got set to our wireless registration page. You can change this in the safari preferences; just choose 'preferences' from the 'Safari' menu, and then on the general tab, you'll be able to set what new windows open with. You can check to make sure it has the right home page specified and that it's set to open new windows to the home page, and that ought to do it. If it still seems stuck, you might try 'reset safari' from the safari menu. This will clear any stored passwords, however. Thanks for your patience, and please let us know if you have any further questions or trouble. Eli Neiburger AADL Tech Manager

Regarding: website

Patron Comment: Hi, A couple of suggestions about the online reservation process (which in general is quite good): I would suggest including the default pickup location in the request, with the option to pick up in an alternated location made available at the reservation screen. This would save time and web pages. I would also suggest that rather than being given a choice at the confirmation page, the patron be returned to the catalog search page. If one is interested in looking at the updated account, this is easily accessed from the catalog search page. Thank you.

AADL Reply: Thanks for contacting us with your suggestions. If you specify a default pickup location in your account preferences (my account > edit > preferences), then the request page will default to your preferred location, and still allow you to choose a different pickup point before you actually place the request, just as you describe. As for the confirmation page, that's a very good suggestion. We don't have quite as much control over that screen as we'd like, but we'd like it work similarly to the way you describe, and we'll get there eventually. Thanks again for your feedback, and thanks for using the library! Eli Neiburger AADL Tech Manager

Regarding: holds

Patron Comment: Greetings AADL staff, First off, I love the website, it's helped me find material that I would have never found otherwise. I have one request that I thought would help me and others when using the My Account section: allow sorting Request and Hold titles by status. In other words, I'd very much like to see which titles are close to being ready to pick up and which are way down on the list (with the ones "ready to pickup" at the top, of course). I think this would make viewing Requests and Holds that much better. Thanks, -David

AADL Reply: Thanks for contacting us, we're glad you love our website! Your suggestion is an excellent one and should be pretty straightforward to implement on our next pass at the my account page. We'll keep it in mind, so watch for it in a future update! Thanks again for your feedback, and thanks for using the Library! Eli Neiburger AADL Tech Manager
