Patron Comment: At the main desk, having the return book drop slot directly in front of when people checkout books with the librarian creates a traffic tie up. The new library should have a better set-up. I love the self serve checkout process. It would seem beneficial if patrons could also check in their books, in a similar fashion. Perhaps that technology is on the way? I love our Northeast Branch Library. Everyone who works there is friendly, helpful and professional!

AADL Reply: Thank you for taking the time to let us know what you like about the NEB and what we can do better. You'll be pleased. The dropbox in the new Traverwood Branch is near, but not at the desk. Hopefully, we will address the traffic patterns better in the new building. The technology that you mention is available, but we are waiting on it to be developed a bit more for efficiency and cost. Someday you will drop a book in a return slot at AADL, and it will be checked in at that moment. Thanks also for the compliments on the staff. I will pass these along and I know they will be appreciated. Sincerely, Josie Parker Director

Patron Comment: I would suggest the library return to men’s and women’s separate restrooms…for healthy sanitary reasons. Thank you.

Patron Comment: Please could you make your study rooms a time limited. i.e. one hour per your patrons. This would be a fair way of letting others to use the facilities. Thanks.

AADL Reply: Thank you for the suggestion. We find that people using our study rooms need them for varying amounts of time. Offering study room space on a first-come-first-serve basis, without reservations or restrictions, we hope is better service than arbitrarily limiting time. Some days a person or group may need a space for several hours, and the next day the space may be empty for hours, but available to anyone. We do have study rooms in all of our buildings, except NEB and Westgate. If you are having difficulty finding study room space in one location, perhaps you should try at a different library building. For example, after school hours in the branches is very busy, but the Downtown Library spaces on the second and third floors are not as used during that time of day. While we are not able to reserve or hold space, library staff will be happy to call another location to inquire about the availability of study room spaces. Again, thank you for the suggestion. Patron Comment: I would like Malletts to post reading suggestions like they do at Main and used to do at Loving. For example: Librarian’s Choice (fiction) Best Mystery; Top selling NYT titles; Oprah suggestions. This was a very valuable service. Thanks.

AADL Reply: Thank you for contacting the Ann Arbor District Library. I appreciate your feedback about the accessbility of readers advisory tools. The end panels Downtown are mini-bulletin boards and lend themselves posting lists and displays moreso than the end panels do at Malletts Creek. Public Service staff at the Reference desks will be happy to pull you current lists for award winning or topical titles upon demand. Also, don't forget to read the titles staff are blogging about on http://www.aadl.org/catalog/books. There are gems in there. Best regards, Celeste Choate, Manager of Access and User Services

Regarding: computers

Patron Comment: I would like to know why the computer system indicates whether you need more time yes or no and when you respond by pressing on yes that the computer system logs you off before you are able to store your document.

AADL Reply: Thanks for contacting us. What you describe it not the way it's supposed to work, and may be the result of a program crash or other mishap. All sessions receive 5, 2, and 1 minute warnings when others are waiting and they've been on the longest. Those windows, somewhat cryptically, say 'Would you like to continue your session'? meaning, are you going to keep going right up until the end? That really doesn't make clear sense, and that screen and the logout process are currently being redeveloped for better usability. Thanks again for your feedback, it helps us focus our project. Thanks for your patience, and please let us know if you have any further questions or trouble. Eli Neiburger Associate Director, IT and Product Development Ann Arbor District Library
