Regarding: cell phones

Patron Comment: BAN CELL PHONES Response to AADL Reply: I appreciate your quick response, it is very unusual these days. I just find it very annoying and distracting doing things on the computer, some difficult, and two or three people are on the phone or hearing them ring all the time. If the ones on the phone would have the common courtesy to go outside to talk there wouldn't be a problem. I guess the days of respecting others is over. Thank you for your attention.

AADL Reply: Thank you for contacting us with your concerns about cell phone use in the Library. The Library does have a policy prohibiting excessive noise in its buildings and staff do and will enforce the policy if they encounter or have a problem brought to their attention. The Library also has a courtesy statement concerning the use of cell phones in the Library that is printed and available at all locations. While we have chosen not to ban cell phones, we do remind people on cell phones that they are in a Library and ask them to refrain from cell phone use in our buildings. Please don't hesitate to ask for staff assistance if someone on a cell phone is too loud or disruptive. Again, thank you for contacting us with your concerns and for letting us know how we can serve you better.

Patron Comment: As a long-time patron of the library, Ms. XXXXX feels that the library is becoming increasingly impersonal. The change from cozy Loving to big Malletts Creek was especially hard for her. She went into Malletts today expecting to find a hold, however it had expired two days earlier. At Loving she felt that the staff knew her and would have kept the hold on the shelf for her. Ms. XXXXX feels that the library should do more to cater towards the elderly. She would really appreciate it if large print books were not kept on the bottom shelf as they are difficult to see and bend down to. This was her main suggestion.

AADL Reply: Thank you for your recent phone call to the Malletts Creek Branch concerning your expired hold and the shelving of large print books. I am sorry that you were unable to come in to the library to pick up your hold before your hold expired. Our new catalog system will not allow us to extend hold periods; after being held for one week, the item moves on to the next patron waiting for the book. If, in the future, you find yourself unable to come in before your hold expires, please call us at Malletts Creek and wed be happy to check out the book on your library card for you to pick up later. You also asked that we not shelve large print books on the bottom shelf. If you have been in the library in the last few weeks, then you may have noticed that we have rearranged our large print and fantasy books so that the large print books have more room and are not shelved on the bottom shelf. I hope that this makes it easier for you to select large print materials, and I thank you for the suggestion. Thank you for sharing your comments with us. Please let me know if I may be of further assistance, or if you have additional comments or questions.

Patron Comment: Consider replacing "computer" chairs - unsafe - tip over backward when sitting & lean back slightly.

AADL Reply: Thank you for the suggestion card that you recently submitted regarding the need to replace the computer chairs at West Branch. The Library recognizes that this is a problem and new chairs have been included for all locations in next years budget which is due to begin July 1, 2005. Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

Regarding: fines

Patron Comment: My suggestion is concerning your fines for overdue videos. As you can see by my record, I usually end up paying $5-$10 each month in fines on videos. I have 2 problems with this: 1) unlike all of the other checked out items, you give NO advance notice on videos over e-mail. and 2)In the REAL world blockbuster, and other video stores have STOPPED charging overdue fees on videos. You are behind times. I have enjoyed the library services for over 30 years, and praise your value in tghe community, but......don't feel I personally have to finance your programs. please reconsider your fee policies.

AADL Reply: I am sorry that you find the library's fines for videos onerous. I am aware that Blockbuster does not charge fines. They do, however, charge to rent videos. The Library does not. I think there may be a problem with your account and I have asked circulation staff to check on your status. Our advance notice email system includes all materials. If you are not getting email notices about due dates for videos, there is an error. If the problem is a technical one, we will correct it and contact you. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Patron Comment: I have a question about volunteering in the libraries. I was looking at your web site and the only volunteer opportunities I see are with the Friends of the Library (store), not the library itself. In grade school, high school and college back in California I volunteered in my schools' libraries, and had a paid work study position in one of my college's libraries. I also spent more than four years volunteering at various branches of the Orange County (CA) Public Library. I am have worked with the Dewey and LCC systems, and helped with clerking/reference, shelving, and binding. I was wondering if there are any volunteer positions with the AADL like the ones I have enjoyed at other libraries? I already work full-time, so I wouldn't be interested in (nor have the time for) one of your posted paid positions. I would be very happy to help a few hours a month though.

AADL Reply: Thank you for pursuing volunteer opportunities at AADL. We historically have not relied on volunteers for the type of work you describe. Volunteer opportunities are limited to the Friends, and they really could use your help, and short term opportunities such as help with summer reading in our branches. I'm forwarding your message and my reply to the Bookshop Manager for the Friends. I know that there are other opportunities to help including delivering material to homebound patrons. Hopefully, between our summer reading opportunities and the Friends' we can find some way for you to contribute as a volunteer to the Library. Each of our branch libraries handles volunteer sign up on location. Anyone at the public desks in the branches can give you the necessary forms. Thank you again for your interest.

Patron Comment: We very much miss the best selling list with the (important to us) brief description of the book posted near the reference desk. We'd love to see it return. Thanks.

AADL Reply: Thank you for completing the comment card regarding the New York Times best seller list. We no longer post the paper copy each week as the list is readily available electronically either by using the New York Times website or by any web search engine. Please feel free to ask for the list at a reference desk Downtown or at a Branch and a library employee will print the current list for you. We understand how helpful the brief description contained on the list can be and we will hope to give you access to that information. Thank you for your interest and time in completing the comment card. If I can be of future assistance please give me a call.

Patron Comment: Get rid of the panhandlers on your front porch. There were 6 of this afternoon 4:30pm and they are really disturbing patrons. The smell is terrible.
