Patron Comment: I'm worried that the library has purchased too many Japanese-animation DVDs recently. (Of course, animation films by Miyazaki are artistic, brilliant, and therefore exceptional.) Do they really have educational values for the public in Ann Arbor? In my humble opinion, it would be better for the library to buy more artistic Japanese films (made by renowed directors, such as Kurosawa and Kitano) than spend money on DVDs of those mediocre Japanese animation films.

AADL Reply: Thank you for contacting us regarding our collection of Japanese films on DVD. Your observation that we have increased our collection of Japanese anime films is correct, and in doing so we

Regarding: cell phones

Patron Comment: Please ban cell phones in library. If the AADL can afford two copies of the Economist magazine, then why not one copy of Adbusters?

AADL Reply: Thank you for your comment card concerning cell phone use in the Library. Library policy does prohibit loud talking and excessive noise in library buildings. While we do not prohibit the use of cell phones in the Library, we do have a courtesy card that we give to persons using cell phones. I have enclosed a copy of the cell phone courtesy card with this letter. In addition, all Library staff members are empowered to enforce our rules of behavior. If your use of the Library is disturbed by excessive noise, please do not hesitate to ask a staff person to intervene for you. Thank you for contacting me concerning the use of cell phones at the Library. I hope that your consequent visits are pleasant.

Patron Comment: Please tell that Jesus-freak sitting behind you to keep it to himself. Do you really think he doesn't annoy anyone?

Regarding: customer service

Patron Comment: With all the videos, you need a room where people can view videotapes; particularly shorter-term videos for research purposes. Thank-you.

AADL Reply: Thank you for your suggestion concerning video previewing at the Library. We will take your recommendation to add a room for viewing videos at the Library into consideration. Thank you for letting us know how we can serve you better.

Patron Comment: 6:00pm You need a security person at Westgate at all times. I was verbally abused by a teenager sitting at the computers tonight. I will not ever come back to this library again. The librarian had no control over him or reference clerk & did not kick him out SOON enough. The language he used was the"f" work & he called me a "ho". This is the second time that a nasty foul mouthed child has done this at the Westgate library.

AADL Reply: I received your card concerning an incident at West Branch, and I do apologize that your visit to the Library was so unpleasant. While we do not have security staff in the branches, we do have rules of behavior that are enforced by all staff members including those at the Downtown facility where security is present. I have spoken with the staff that was present when another patron used inappropriate language and while I can understand your feelings in the matter, the situation was handled properly by staff. If the patron had refused to leave and had persisted in the behavior, the police would have been called. I, too, would prefer that all persons using the library would always be civil and courteous. While I cannot guarantee that, I can assure you that the Library to the best of its ability, prohibits and discourages poor behavior.

Patron Comment: Please put up a sign in the Periodicals Room that newspapers remain in the room, to remind the odd person (or these days the increasing number of people who disregard that library policy) who either carelessly or with the intent of losing the information in the newspapers, take them out of the room. If the AADL, from the dictum of one or two officials, has been itself ordered to disregard that library policy, then I suggest that the Board re-institute the policy, since it is one of the high and historical standards of professional libraries - or rather, of the library profession. Let's look to the future. Those people who safe-guard high standards stay in charge and retain control.

AADL Reply: I have received your comment cards concerning our periodicals and display collections. I am sorry that you feel our standards of service as they relate to accessibility are lacking. The Ann Arbor District Library is committed to intellectual freedom and does understand its role in upholding free speech in the community. While we may not always meet the expectations of individual users, please be assured that our collection decisions are made with access and availability as priorities. Thank you for letting me know your concerns and I hope that you continue to use the Library.
