Modern Renditions of Old Compositions submitted by Meginator on July 16, 2020, 8:08am These versions of Bach’s first, second, and third suites for cello breathe new life into the old compositions, exposing some of their technical intricacies in new and unexpected ways in the process. A few movements (particularly in Suite 3) do suffer somewhat for the lack of the cello’s melancholy lingering properties, but classical guitar is uniquely suited to Bach’s style of carefully calculated melodic development and Estrem carefully draws out these qualities. I’m not usually a huge fan of Bach on period instruments, but this reinvigorated interpretation of is work is very accessible for listeners not particularly acquainted with the Baroque.
