This book offers a broad yet accessible introduction to the concept of music, providing historical context about the development of instruments and musical notation along with brief notes about several important innovators in Western music (all of them are male and all but one of them white). Because I am already familiar with these concepts I cannot speak to how well the book introduces them to unfamiliar audiences, but the text seemed fairly straightforward and aimed at the general reader with no previous knowledge or experience. The sidebars also include meaningful interactive activities and questions. Overall, I’d say that this is a good place to start if you’re interested in learning more, broadly, about music.
