Excellent author submitted by Susan4Pax -prev. sueij- on August 7, 2018, 6:32pm 3.5/5 Okorafor is an amazing writer, and _Akata Witch_ (the first in this series) is an excellent book. I just wasn’t quite as enamored of _Akata Warrior_. It’s still a very good book, mind you. _Warrior_ continues to develop the solid story about a Nigerian/American girl who has discovered her magic and a society of magical people, learned the meaning and value of friendship, and fighting some very interesting bad guys. It is sorta-kinda Harry Potter but with an African rather than European worldview, and that is simply a *wonderful* thing, and when Okorafor writes it, it is always worth reading.

But this sequel didn’t hold my interest, particularly through the first half of the book. It felt scattered, like she was searching for a way toward the true plot of the book. Sunny does a little of this and a little of that, which might be what being a teenager is like, but doesn’t make for an interesting novel. I don’t feel like we learn that much new about her, or that we learn that much new about the world she is moving in. It felt unfocused, which is unlike most of Okorafor’s work.
