"In Who Built That? Bridges, illustrator Didier Cornille presents ten of the most important bridges in the world, from the world's first cast-iron bridge (The Iron Bridge) to the longest pre-stressed concrete bridge in the southern hemisphere (The Rio-Niteroi Bridge) to the tallest bridge in the world (the Millau Viduct). Introducing each engineer or architect, the main concepts of their work, as well as some of their most important projects in charming drawings and accessible text, Bridges is a fun primer for anyone interested in learning more about these incredible structures. Didier's step-by-step drawings of bridges ranging from the Brooklyn Bridge (1883) and the Sydney Harbour Bridge (1932) to Santiago Calatrava's Peace Bridge (2012) and Rudy Ricciotti's MUCEM Footbridge (2013), provide original insight into the development of the engineering and architectural concepts behind each bridge"-- Provided by publisher.

falls a bit short submitted by camelsamba on August 30, 2019, 10:43pm The first thing you notice about this book is the format: it is about 5" tall by 12" wide. This is perfect for the topic of bridges. The book describes 10 unique bridges, ranging from the first iron bridge (1779) to a modern pedestrian bridge (2013). The earlier descriptions are quite informative and clearly illustrate what was unique about the design or construction. For example, with that first iron bridge there is a clear explanation of how iron is cast and how the arches were built. The second vignette - the Brooklyn Bridge - has a great illustration of how the foundations were constructed underwater. Unfortunately, some of the later vignettes seem a bit more focused on the designers than the construction; in my opinion these fall short and left me wishing for more detail.
