In this prequel to Alice in Wonderland, Cath would rather open a bakery and marry for love than accept a proposal from the King of Hearts, especially after meeting the handsome and mysterious court jester.

Marissa Meyer's Best Work submitted by torikaebaya on February 4, 2017, 11:02am As much as I adore Cress, I concede Heartless is wordsmith Marissa Meyer's best work. A risque, swooning, spontaneous, jovial feat of dry punnery to behold. You will not be disappointed.

Such a good book submitted by i'm a blobfish on June 21, 2018, 4:44pm Heartless is about a girl named Catherine who is born into an aristocrat family. Her parents want her to marry the King of Hearts, but Cath wants nothing more than to open up a bakery and bake sweets for ever. But at a ball, she meets a mysterious court Jester. She falls in love with him and plans to run away with him. But things don't go as planned and it seems that Catherine's fate is already planned out. Read this for adventure and a forbidden romance.

When the Villain becomes the Protagonist submitted by lyan.current on June 21, 2021, 7:00pm “Heartless,” by Marissa Meyer, is the imagined prequel to Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland.” But this time, the spotlight is on the infamous Queen of Hearts’ backstory.

I must be heartless submitted by laursanc6 on June 24, 2021, 5:23pm I was ultimately let down in the end. It started so strong and I was excited to keep reading and see all my favorite Wonderland aspects and then we met Jest and of course my heart went boom. There were whimsical aspects in this book but they honestly felt a little overshadowed by a lot of humdrum. There were so many meaningless balls/parties, talk about her bakery that NEVER comes to fruition, and Cath's constant back and forth about the king. To sum it up I was bored. I kept hoping for Cath to stand up for herself or for a great magical moment but I never really got that. And, when Cath did stand up for herself it felt far too late.

The romance in this book was also pretty lackluster. Very much insta-love. Cath and Jest had few interactions but they were both enamored with each other. I can't even remember if they kiss?!? I'm gonna be honest I never really felt like Cath loved Jest though. I think she was more in love with her sweets which I almost think would have been a better plot. Especially since she couldn't stop talking about her stupid bakery! I think Cath and Jest just didn't have enough time together for me to feel any connection between them or me to their relationship. There wasn't enough angst or longing (as it is a forbidden romance) so it just fell flat to me.

The climax/final conflict and conclusion of this book felt so rushed. I didn't even realize what had happened.

Part of me wants to give this 2/5 stars but I feel like I've read worse books than this that deserve the 2 stars and a part of me did enjoy sections of this book. For instance, Cath and Jest's first meeting was whimsical and everything I could have imagined especially that little trick with the corset laces. So, I'm going to give this 3/5 stars but I am salty.

AMAZING! submitted by tingzhaowb on June 10, 2022, 1:39pm I really loved how the story played out. It may have been a bit confusing and maybe even boring at some times, but it started off super strong and ended with a great ending too!

Who doesn't love a good backstory? submitted by JTreadwell on June 12, 2023, 4:22pm In a world where a lot of classic fairytales and Disney moves are being remade or generating spin-offs, this book fits in beautifully. It tells the story of why the Queen of Hearts is both crazy and bloodthirsty. It humanizes her, takes you through her whole life, with lots of whimsy and romance and baking. The real reason she best known for heartlessly saying 'off with their heads' is actually heart-braking in the end.
