When the unconventional Durrell family can no longer endure the damp, gray English climate, they do what any sensible family would do: sell their house and relocate to the sunny Greek isle of Corfu. My Family and Other Animals was intended to embrace the natural history of the island but ended up as a delightful account of Durrell's family's experiences, from the many eccentric hangers-on to the ceaseless procession of puppies, toads, scorpions, geckoes, ladybugs, glowworms, octopuses, bats, and butterflies into their home.

Different from the TV Show, But Still Delightful submitted by sdunav on July 15, 2018, 12:08pm This memoir is full of beautiful prose describing the culture & nature of Corfu and the author's delightfully weird family in the Mediterranean in the 1930's. If you like the TV show, give this a try. It's just as interesting and more lyrical than I expected.
Great comedy submitted by Isabella Giviyan on July 27, 2018, 11:37am This book is a memoir of the adventures and misadventures of the Durrell family in the Mediterranean. It is very funny, and it will lift anyone's mood. In addition, the great imagery makes you feel as if though you are there along with the characters.
Meh submitted by hiker15 on August 23, 2020, 8:29am I never watched the TV show before reading this book so I wasn't familiar with the family or Corfu before reading it. The title contains the words "and other animals" which intrigued me about what animals the family owned. It was quite disappointing that the book was primarily about the wandering around Corfu of the teenage son as he discovered the various birds, insects, small reptiles, etc and brought them home.
lovely memoir submitted by zaraz on June 9, 2023, 10:40am if you’re a fan of the TV adaptation, definitely give this a read! a fun, well-written memoir about a very interesting life in beautiful Corfu.
