A Different Kind of Christmas Story submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 9:12pm This picture book has a wonderful visual style, and Rubin Pingk makes the most out of a limited color palette. The story follows a young ninja who takes it upon himself to ensure that he has the Christmas he wants, although he finds Santa to be a more formidable opponent than he had perhaps counted on. Pingk’s illustrations draw somewhat from manga influences, primarily in the characters’ expressiveness, and the book’s varied layouts do a lot to help carry the story’s ebbs and flows. A few standout scenes are full of movement and motion, and the book has an excellent sense of humor with a fairly standard cheerful message about Santa’s legendary generosity. With plenty of action and a fairly straightforward narrative line, this is a good read-aloud choice, a good transition point for readers who are moving from picture books into comics, and a good picture book for young readers who are drawn to anime and manga.
