A three-part series exploring the reign of Queen Victoria through her husband Albert, the Prince Consort, and the lives of her children. By telling the stories of the personal relationships between Victoria, her husband, and their nine children, it looks for a fresh understanding of the longest reigning Queen and the nature of the British monarchy.
The best laid plans: Queen Victoria and Prince Albert shared a passionate marriage. Behind closed doors, royal domestic life often seemed like a battlefield. Examined here is Victoria's tempestuous relationship with Prince Albert, their attempts to engineer the upbringing of their children and to save the monarchy by projecting a modern image of the Royal family.
A domestic tyrant: This episode explores how, after Albert's death, Victoria clung to and bullied her daughters and arranged their marriages. In response, the princesses fought back, becoming independent women determined to find love and fresh purpose. From sculpture to medicine, the daughters became champions of women for a new era.
Princes will be princes: After Albert's death, Victoria's sons struggled to live up to their father's model of purity. This episode focuses on Victoria's difficult relationship with her eldest son Bertie, the Prince of Wales, whom she blamed for Albert's death, believing his sexual indiscretions to have fatally weakened her husband. Ultimately, the idea of monarchy based on purity is put to the test as the philandering Bertie comes to the throne.
DVD, widescreen ; Dolby Digital stereo.
