"Before the nightmares began, Yeong-hye and her husband lived an ordinary, controlled life. But the dreams--invasive images of blood and brutality--torture her, driving Yeong-hye to purge her mind and renounce eating meat altogether. It's a small act of independence, but it interrupts her marriage and sets into motion an increasingly grotesque chain of events at home. As her husband, her brother-in-law, and her sister each fight to reassert their control, Yeong-hye obsessively defends the choice that's become sacred to her. Soon their attempts turn desperate, subjecting first her mind, then her body, to ever more intrusive and perverse violations, sending Yeong-hye spiraling into a dangerous, bizarre estrangement, not only from those closest to her but also from herself." -- jacket.

Interesting... submitted by DBJC on June 16, 2018, 9:42am I read this book in a few days, but I've had trouble with parts of it. It's aggressively bizarre which could a good thing if you're used to, say, Kafka. This book covers three points of view surrounding the main character Yeong-hye, which is an interesting way to tell a story. Reading this book was like a slow-burning nightmare, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but not my cup of tea. Let's just say that. If you read this, suspend your disbelief and be prepared to experience the strange.

Terrifying Fable of Sexuality and Social Conventions and Going Nuts submitted by sVfGI7Glt2pz7GZgVB90 on July 10, 2020, 6:41am This Korean writer's elegant and disconcerting prose portrays a woman who stops eating meat and begins experiencing bizarre dreams. Her family attempts to make sense of this: her spouse shows utter disdain, her brother-in-law stoops into sexual obsession. The imagery of the novel are aggressively arresting---from the woman's blood-soaked apparitions of two naked bodies tangled and highlighted with flowers, for example.

Leaves the reader wondering about what point the author is trying to make!

Good, but massive TWs submitted by fruitybee on March 13, 2024, 9:05am A very graphic book. I recommend reading it if you can stomach it, but it does have graphic sex (consensual and nonconsensual) and some very gorey aspects. Part 1 was, for me, the most difficult to stomach. I read it in a day and had to set the book down for two weeks. Part 2 and especially 3 were alot easier.

It's a very different feel from the norm. It's translated from Korean, and definitely has heavy Korean cultural influences. A very abstract piece. Worth reading if you can, but be advised about the TWs. It deals a lot in death and mental illness, too.
